🧭 TL;DR — the honest bottom line
Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟, Jiǔzhàigōu) is one long Y-shaped valley of lakes, forest and Tibetan villages in Sichuan's Aba prefecture, and almost everything here runs on one system: a reserved ticket, a shuttle bus, and a clock that closes the gate. Get that system right and the rest is looking at water. The second big sight, Huanglong, is a separate park with its own ticket and its own hours. Give the pair about 3 days.
Two things to sort before you book anything: your passport (the 240-hour transit does not reach Aba Prefecture) and your park reservation (no reservation, no entry, and the busy days sell out).
Tell us your dates and where you are coming from, and we'll plan your Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong trip with you: flights, hotels, train tickets, a guide or a private car. For the park tickets we show you how to book. (One message, no obligation.)
Message us →📌 Every price, hour and rule below comes from the park's own notices or Sichuan government pages, with the date next to it, checked 4 October 2026. The park changes prices and hours by season and by holiday, so the date matters. Where official pages disagree or say nothing, this guide says so and does not pick a side.
Before You Go
🛂 Do You Need a Visa for Jiuzhaigou? The 240-Hour Transit Does Not Cover It
China has two big visa-free routes, and most guides treat them as interchangeable. For Jiuzhaigou they are not. Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong both sit in Aba Prefecture, and Aba is outside the area the 240-hour transit allows in Sichuan. Your passport decides whether you can come at all.
| Your passport | Can you visit Jiuzhaigou visa-free? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| On the 30-day list (50 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Brazil) | Yes, up to 30 days per entry | Ordinary passport. The notices we read do not tie this route to a list of provinces. For 48 of the 50 countries the policy runs to 31 December 2026; Russia's runs to 31 December 2027; Brunei has no end date. The notices do not say what happens to a stay that starts before the end date and runs past it. Full list and deadline |
| On the 240-hour list but not the 30-day list (the US, Mexico, Czechia, Lithuania and others) | No, not on a 240-hour transit | You need a Chinese tourist (L) visa for Jiuzhaigou. |
| Mutual-exemption countries (Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and others) | Yes, under your country's agreement | A single stay is generally up to 30 days and the total no more than 90 days in any 180. Check your own country's agreement for its exact terms. |
| Any other passport | Only with a visa | Apply before you travel. |

Why the 240-hour transit stops short of Jiuzhaigou
Sichuan's 240-hour area is 11 cities only: Chengdu, Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Yibin, Ya'an, Meishan and Ziyang. Aba and Ganzi prefectures are not on the list. The two Chengdu airports (Shuangliu and Tianfu) are the only Sichuan entry ports, and landing there does not widen the area. A stay permit will not help either: it is for emergencies such as sudden illness, not for adding places to a trip.
So the trap looks like this. A US traveler books a 240-hour transit through Chengdu, sees Jiuzhaigou's turquoise lakes online, and plans a train north. Riding the train is not the problem. Staying in Aba is. If Jiuzhaigou is on your list, get the L visa first. If Jiuzhaigou is not a must, the transit still works well for Chengdu and Leshan. Details: 240-hour transit by province.
Does Hong Kong or Macao count as the third place for the 240-hour transit?
It does not matter for Jiuzhaigou, because the transit cannot take you there. For other trips: the rule says "a third country or region", and the official pages we read do not name Hong Kong or Macao either way. Treating them as qualifying is an inference. If your plan depends on it, ask the National Immigration Administration's 24-hour hotline, +86 12367 (English available), before you book. US citizens must also meet every 240-hour condition, including an onward ticket to a third country or region.
Arrival card: you can fill in the China arrival card online before arrival. If you cannot complete it online in advance, you can scan the QR code, use a smart device or fill in a paper form at the port of entry. Hotel registration is covered under Where to Stay.
🗓️ Best Time to Visit Jiuzhaigou (and When It Sells Out)
Go in October, but not in the first days of the National Day holiday. The park itself calls October "the most colourful season of the year" (jiuzhai.com notice, 28 Sep 2026). The same page shows the cost of that fame. Here is what the official numbers say.
| Period | What the official pages say | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 April to 15 November (peak season) | Daily cap 41,000 visitors; once sold out, no more entry (notices 8 Jul and 28 Sep 2026). | No entry after the last-entry time, even with a ticket. Entry hours are in the opening hours list. Plan to arrive early. |
| Summer | The park's own notice gives an average of 18°C (8 Jul 2026). | Pack layers and a rain shell. On 26 July 2026 a short, heavy rain event set off a debris flow, with no casualties; the park announced on 29 July that the whole park would reopen from 30 July. |
| October | Autumn forest in full colour (28 Sep 2026). National Day 2026: 41,000 visitors on both 1 and 2 October; tickets for 3 to 6 October were sold out (2 Oct 2026 notice). | Autumn colour and holiday crowds arrive together. Ordinary days are far quieter. |
| 16 November to 31 March (off-season) | The ticket page shows lower prices (see the budget). The 2026-27 off-season notice is not out yet. In 2024-25 the park used a 23,000 daily cap. The park's introduction says Long Lake and Panda Lake freeze to a depth of 60 cm, while the other lakes do not freeze completely. | Quieter, but check the new notice for hours before you book. The park says winter snow can halt flights at Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport. |
The date you pick decides whether the valley feels like a nature reserve or a queue
The park publishes daily headcounts (jiuzhai.com, "daily visitors" page). On 1 and 2 October 2026 it hit the 41,000 cap. On 26 September it was 34,305 and on 30 September 26,368. Most ordinary days from 13 to 24 September were between 13,000 and 22,000. If your dates are flexible, that gap is the best cheap upgrade you can make to the trip. Look at the official daily-visitor page before you lock your dates.
The park's introduction describes spring thaw, new leaves and flowers, with Long Lake still frozen during part of spring. It gives no dated viewing window, and we found no precise foliage dates. We also found no weather-office temperature tables.
✈️ How to Get to Jiuzhaigou from Chengdu: High-Speed Rail, Flight or Bus
Jiuzhaigou is far from everything. For most people the answer is the high-speed train, then the park's shuttle. The trap is where the train stops: Huanglong Jiuzhai station (黄龙九寨站) sits 93 km and about 2 hours from the Jiuzhaigou gate, but only 27 km and 35 minutes from Huanglong.
| Option | Route | Time (official pages) | Cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High-speed rail + park shuttle | Chengdu East (成都东) to Huanglong Jiuzhai (黄龙九寨), then the park's direct shuttle to the Jiuzhaigou gate | Train: fastest 1 h 39 min (park site, 8 Jul 2026 notice); a 27 Sep 2025 notice says about 2 h. Shuttle: about 2 h. That is roughly 3 h 40 min moving at best (our arithmetic), before waiting. | Train fare: check 12306. Shuttle fare: shown in the "九旅悦行" mini-program. | The park says every high-speed train has a connecting shuttle. Up to 30 trains a day run between Chengdu East and the Huanglong Jiuzhai, Huangshengguan and Songpan stations (undated park page). |
| Flight | Direct flights from Chengdu and Beijing to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (27 Sep 2025 notice) | Airport to the valley entrance: 88 km, 1.5 h (park arrival page). A 27 Sep 2025 notice says the airport bus to Jiuzhaigou takes about 1 h 50 min. Flight time: ask the airline. | Fares: check the airline. Airport bus fare: not found. | High-altitude airport. The park says winter snow can stop flights, so keep a Plan B for the return. For carry-on batteries see power bank rules. |
| Long-distance bus | Chengdu Chadianzi or Xinnanmen bus station to Jiuzhaigou entrance bus station | The park gives road distance 440 km and the drive as 9 to 10 hours; it does not publish a bus timetable. | About ¥168 (27 Sep 2025 notice) | Book on Sichuan's bus ticket website. Slowest option. |
| Private car | Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by car; ask separately about a route to Huanglong. | The park lists 440 km and 9 to 10 hours for the western road route from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou. We have not confirmed a Chengdu-to-Huanglong driving time. | Ask us for a quote with your dates. | Flexible stops, and you skip the shuttle leg. Best for groups or families. |
How to book the train, step by step
- Pick your date after you have a park reservation (see Jiuzhaigou Tickets 2026), not before.
- Search the 12306 English website for Chengdu East (成都东) to Huanglong Jiuzhai (黄龙九寨). The park says fares are on 12306.
- Book the shuttle in the "九旅悦行" mini-program, or ask the shuttle line, 0837-7241000 (park notice, 27 Sep 2025).
- Read how changes and refunds work on 12306 before you pay.
We can book your train tickets, flights, hotel and a private car, and plan the route around your reservation date.
Send your arrival date, number of people and passport country, and we'll plan Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by train, flight or private car.
Ask us →Two pairs of numbers do not agree. Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai is "fastest 1 h 39 min" on the park's arrival page and the 8 Jul 2026 notice, and "about 2 hours" in the 27 Sep 2025 notice. Airport to Jiuzhaigou is "1.5 hours" on the arrival page and "about 1 h 50 min" in the 27 Sep 2025 notice. Plan on the longer figure.
💴 Jiuzhaigou Travel Budget: What the Official Numbers Add Up To
All official prices are in Chinese yuan. We list only figures with a source and a date. Hotels, meals and the Huanglong ropeway have no official figure we could confirm, so you will not find an invented daily budget here.
| Item | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Jiuzhaigou entry, peak season (1 Apr to 15 Nov) | ¥190 per person | jiuzhai.com notice, 8 Jul 2026 |
| Jiuzhaigou park shuttle, peak season | ¥90 per person, paid on top of the entry ticket. Entry plus shuttle: ¥280 | jiuzhai.com notice, 8 Jul 2026 |
| Jiuzhaigou, off-season (16 Nov to 31 Mar) | Entry ¥80, shuttle ¥80: ¥160 (current ticket page, undated). The 2026-27 off-season notice is not out. | jiuzhai.com ticket page, checked 4 Oct 2026 |
| Accident insurance | ¥10 per person, optional | Aba Prefecture government site, 26 Mar 2026 (park notice of 23 Mar 2026) |
| Huanglong main park, peak season | ¥170 full price, ¥85 half price, from 1 June 2026 | Songpan County government site, 1 Jun 2026 |
| Huanglong ropeway and shuttle | A March 2025 Women's Day promotion required separate ropeway and sightseeing-shuttle tickets. We have not confirmed the current ticket inclusions or prices; check before booking. The only price we saw is from 2021, so we do not use it. | Sichuan tourism department, 5 Mar 2025 — Women's Day promotion |
| Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou by long-distance bus | About ¥168 | jiuzhai.com notice, 27 Sep 2025 |
| High-speed train, flight, park station shuttle | Check 12306, the airline, and the "九旅悦行" mini-program | jiuzhai.com notices |
| Child, senior, student and other discounts | See Jiuzhaigou Tickets 2026 | jiuzhai.com notices, 8 Jul 2026 and 15 Aug 2024 |
Doing both parks in peak season costs ¥450 per person in tickets (¥280 + ¥170, our arithmetic), before any Huanglong ropeway or shuttle ticket (we have not confirmed what the entrance ticket includes), insurance, trains and everything else.
What we cannot price. Hotel rooms and meals around Jiuzhaigou have no official price list we could source, so we give no number and no "cheap" or "expensive" label. For a dated quote on hotel, train and a guide, send us your dates.

Arrival & Essentials
Three jobs before you fly: get online, get paying, and work out how you reach the gate. On this trip the third job comes with one extra step: your park reservation has to exist before the train booking does.
📱 Internet in China: Get an eSIM before you fly
Mainland China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and many Western apps. A normal roaming SIM hits the same wall. The usual fix is a travel eSIM that routes your data outside the mainland, so those apps work without a separate VPN. You install it as a second line. Your home number keeps working for calls and texts.
- Buy a China-capable travel eSIM at home, on your own Wi-Fi. Common brands include Airalo, Nomad, Holafly and Saily. Compare coverage and data caps on each provider's own page.
- Install it from the QR code before you fly. Most providers ask only for an email address; check the provider's page.
- Leave the line off until you land, then switch it on. Do not plan to install it after you land: activation pages can themselves be blocked.
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked before you buy.
Before you go up the valley. We found no official statement about mobile coverage inside the park, so do not assume it. Download an offline map of the area. Take a screenshot of your reservation and ID details.
💳 How to Pay in China: Alipay and WeChat for Foreigners
Most people pay by phone, but cash is still legal tender: since 1 February 2026, staffed businesses must accept it. Read what that means for you in Is cash accepted in China?. We do not quote Alipay or WeChat transaction limits here, because figures floating around the web are out of date. Check the limit screen in your own app. Nothing in the official pages says how payment works at food stops inside the park, so carry some cash in small notes.
Set up Alipay before you fly
- Download Alipay and register with your home mobile number.
- Add a real Visa or Mastercard. Prepaid and virtual cards are often rejected, which is a common reason setup fails.
- Finish the identity check in the app.
- Set up WeChat the same way as a backup. You need it anyway: the park's ticket booking runs in WeChat mini-programs, so your WeChat account has to work before you arrive. Whether a foreign card can pay inside those mini-programs is not covered by the official pages we read. The full booking steps are in Jiuzhaigou Tickets 2026.
🚌 Getting Around Jiuzhaigou: Station and Airport Transfers
Inside the valley you ride the park's own shuttle (see how the shuttle bus works). Outside it, these are the links the park publishes.
- Huanglong Jiuzhai station: the park's direct shuttle runs from the station to the gate. Fares are in "九旅悦行" (mini-program or WeChat account), and the park says every high-speed train has a connecting shuttle. The ride takes about two hours (8 Jul 2026 notice). The shuttle line is 0837-7241000.
- Songpan station: the same park shuttle serves it (27 Sep 2025 notice).
- Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport: a coach company runs buses to the main sights, including Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong (park arrival page). The timetable is an image on that page that we did not read.
- Anything else (hotel to gate, a stop at Huanglong on the way): ask your hotel, or ask us to arrange a private car or a guide.
Nobody sleeps inside the park, and the gate stops letting people in at 14:00
The rule is "tour inside the valley, sleep outside it" (沟内游,沟外住): staying overnight in the park is banned, and so are drones and pets (jiuzhai.com notice, 28 Sep 2026). Everyone sleeps in the nearby towns and rides in. That is why the real plan is the commute: how far your bed is from the gate, and whether you can be through it before the 14:00 last entry. Hotel options are under Where to Stay Near Jiuzhaigou.

Things to Do in Jiuzhaigou
The valley is the heart of the trip, and it runs on a ticket, a shuttle and a closing gate. Prices and hours below come from the park's own notices and Sichuan government pages, each with its date.
🏞️ Jiuzhaigou Valley Itinerary & Map: Route, Highlights and the Shuttle Bus
Short answer: you do the valley by shuttle bus plus walking, in one long day, and you decide in advance which stops to get off at. The park's official guide describes three gullies, Zechawa (则查洼沟), Rize (日则沟) and Shuzheng (树正沟), forming a "Y" with a total length of about 60 km. The same page says the whole visit is "by shuttle bus plus walking" and that a one-day visit takes real stamina.
How the shuttle bus works
- The shuttle runs like a public bus: you board and leave only at the designated stops (official notice, 27 Sep 2025). It is not a hop-on, hop-off loop where the driver stops for a photo.
- The peak-season shuttle fare is separate from the gate ticket; both are in the budget table. The official pages list no timetable, stop list, interval or full-loop duration, so we do not give you one.
- The official page says the shuttle does not stop at Upper Seasons Lake and Lower Seasons Lake and that walking there is too far. Plan around that, and do not count on those two lakes.
The official one-day sample, and how to read it
The park publishes a "one-day highlights" sample that leaves the gate at 7:00 and rides about an hour (7:00 to 8:10) to the Primeval Forest (原始森林) before working through the stops. Treat it as a sample, not a rule: on ordinary peak-season days entry opens later than 7:00 (see opening hours). What it does tell you is the park's idea of the day: ride deep into the valley first, then cover the rest on foot and by shuttle.
Main stops at a glance
The official sources name these places. They do not give a stop-by-stop shuttle map, so the table lists only what the park itself says. For altitude advice at the high stops, see Know Before You Go.
| Stop | What the official sources say | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Gate (沟口) | Shuttle departs from here; the official one-day sample starts here at 7:00 | Entry stops at 14:00; the park closes at 18:00 |
| Primeval Forest (原始森林) | About one hour by shuttle from the gate in the official sample; listed as a high-altitude stop | Go easy here: the official health note says do not drink large amounts of water and do not exert yourself |
| Nuorilang Service Centre (诺日朗服务中心) | Buffet, set meals and local dishes. A September 2025 notice also named a smoking area here, but the September 2026 notice asks visitors not to smoke. Follow current signs and staff instructions. | The park's named food stop; see What to Eat |
| Long Lake (长海) | High-altitude stop; in winter it freezes to a depth of 60 cm, as does Panda Lake | Dress warm |
| Five-Colour Pool (五彩池) | Listed with Long Lake and the Primeval Forest as a high-altitude stop | Same altitude advice |
| Panda Lake (熊猫海) | Freezes in winter like Long Lake; the park says other lakes do not freeze fully | A winter visit is still a lake visit |
| Upper and Lower Seasons Lake (上季节海、下季节海) | The shuttle does not stop; walking is too far | Plan without them unless the park says otherwise on the day |
Huanglong (黄龙), the other half of the pair, is a separate park with its own ticket. It has its own section: Huanglong Day Trip.
🎟️ Jiuzhaigou Tickets 2026: Prices, Booking and Foreign Passports
Short answer: you must book in advance, and your name has to be on the reservation. The official wording is "no reservation, no trip" (非预约,不出行). Free and discounted ticket holders must reserve too. There is no turning up at the gate to see what happens, and a sold-out day means a closed gate even with money in hand. The park advises booking 7 to 14 days ahead.
What it costs: peak season ¥280 per person (¥190 ticket plus ¥90 shuttle); the current off-season listing is ¥160. Full table with sources: budget. Insurance is ¥10 and voluntary.
Winter costs 160 yuan combined, against 280 yuan in peak season
The park's ticket page lists an off-peak gate ticket of ¥80 plus an ¥80 shuttle, against ¥190 plus ¥90 in peak season. The winter page is undated and the 2026-27 off-season notice has not come out, so treat the winter figure as a current listing, not a promise. The trade-off is in the hours and the cap: the 2024-25 off-season entry window was 8:30 to 14:00, and the daily cap was 23,000, versus 41,000 in peak season.
Discounts and free entry. The official notice says only that the ticket types are listed in the WeChat mini-program, so we do not state ages or prices. Holders of discounted or free tickets must show the original supporting document at the gate (park notice, 15 Aug 2024).
Opening hours: three answers, depending on the date
The park's own notices do not give one entry time. It depends on season and holiday:
- National Day holiday 2026: entry 7:30 to 14:00, no entry after 14:00, park closes at 18:00 (notice of 2 Oct 2026).
- Ordinary peak-season days: entry 8:00 to 14:00, close 18:00 (notice of 8 Jul 2026).
- Off-season 2024-25: entry 8:30 to 14:00, close 18:00. The 2026-27 hours are not published yet.
Check the park's notice for your date. In every notice we found, the last entry is 14:00, not 17:00.
How to book, step by step
Booking happens in WeChat, so install and test WeChat first (see How to Pay).
- Check the numbers. The park's website has a "daily visitors" page. The WeChat official account "九寨沟" has a bottom menu that shows ticket availability for the next seven days.
- Pick your date and book 7 to 14 days ahead. That is the park's own advice (28 Sep 2026 notice).
- Use an official channel. The park names the WeChat mini-program or official account "九寨沟旅游官方平台" (Jiuzhaigou Official Tourism Platform) and the "阿坝旅游网" (Aba Tourism) mini-program (2 Oct 2026 notice). Its 2024 notice also lists Ctrip, Meituan, Douyin, Tongcheng and Amap, if they carry the official-certification badge. It warned on 15 August 2024 that on some resale listings the ticket data did not match the visitor's details, so those visitors could not enter. Look for the official certification mark.
- Reserve under your own name. Entry is real-name, and at the gate the park checks the person against the booking ("人证合一"). The rule is written for an original ID card.
- Sold out? Use the waitlist. The mini-program has a waitlist ("候补预约"): if someone cancels, places are allocated in order, and if it does not succeed the payment is refunded to the original payment route. The park releases returned tickets every day at 08:00 and 17:00, so check again at those times.
Foreign passports: what the park actually says
The only statement we can cite is a park news item from 4 February 2025 (a Spring Festival review). It lists measures including booking by passport number and a dedicated channel for foreign visitors. That page is a news summary, not a ticket-rules page. The park's pages say nothing about how the mini-program takes a passport, how the gate checks one, or whether foreign visitors can buy at a window.
Until you know, do not buy a ticket from a third party "just in case". Call the park's ticket line, 0837-7769999, or the Aba Tourism ticket line, 400-088-6969 (press 1) (2 Oct 2026 notice). The pages do not say whether either line has English-speaking staff.
Not sure how a foreign passport goes through the park's booking? Tell us your dates on WhatsApp. We'll help you plan it and tell you where to ask; the park tickets themselves are booked on the park's own channels.
Ask us →🍲 What to Eat in Jiuzhaigou: Tibetan Food and Local Dishes
Short answer: eat Tibetan food and mountain mushrooms. Jiuzhaigou sits in Aba prefecture, in the mountains of northwest Sichuan, so a meal here is closer to a Tibetan-plateau menu than a Chengdu one. If hotpot is what you came for, that is in Chengdu. The park's "local specialties" page gives its own "must-try" list. Show it to a waiter or search the names on your phone.
The park's must-try list
- Tibetan mini hotpot (藏式小火锅, zàngshì xiǎo huǒguō)
- Grilled sausage (烤肠, kǎo cháng)
- Cold walnut-flower salad (凉拌核桃花, liángbàn hétáohuā)
- Jiuzhai mushroom pot (九寨菌煲, Jiǔzhài jūn bāo)
- Pigeon and tianma (gastrodia) stew cup (天麻乳鸽盅, tiānmá rǔgē zhōng)
- Potato glutinous cakes (洋芋糍粑, yángyù cíbā)
- Whole roast lamb (烤全羊, kǎo quán yáng)
- Hand-torn beef ribs (手扒牛排, shǒubā niúpái)
- Jiuzhai dried persimmon (九寨柿饼, Jiǔzhài shìbǐng)
- Jiuzhai pickled-cabbage noodles (九寨酸菜面, Jiǔzhài suāncài miàn)
The Tibetan table
For Tibetan food, the park names beef, roast lamb (烧羊), tsampa (糌粑, zānba, roasted barley flour), butter tea (酥油茶, sūyóu chá) and highland barley wine (青稞酒, qīngkē jiǔ) as the typical dishes. If you want a short list to try, start with butter tea and tsampa: they are the two items on that page you will not find on a standard Chinese menu.
Where to eat (named in official sources only)
- Inside the park: Nuorilang Service Centre (诺日朗服务中心). The park's notice lists a buffet, set meals and local specialities there. The Nuorilang Restaurant phone is 0837-7738888. We have no price, so ask before you order. The same notice mentions a food street with 30 chain brands.
- Guibinlou (九寨沟贵宾楼), at the gate. The park's accommodation page says the hotel's waterside restaurant is known for its "mountain treasures mushroom pot" (山珍菌煲) made with wild mushrooms. That is the park's own description of the hotel, not an independent review.
- Everywhere else: we have not verified restaurant names, opening hours or per-person prices for Zhangzha town or Jiuzhaigou county town. Do not treat any price you read online as official.
🎭 Jiuzhaigou at Night: Shows and What to Do in the Evening
Short answer: the park closes at 18:00, so your evening is in the town outside. The valley will not be your night out.
The park's local-features page lists four song-and-dance evening shows in Jiuzhaigou County:
- Zang Mi (藏谜)
- Jiuzhai Qianguqing (九寨千古情)
- Impression Jiuzhai: Highland Red (印象九寨·高原红)
- Tibetan King's Banquet Dance (藏王宴舞)
We have not checked their ticket prices, show times or booking channels, and the park's pages give none. Tell us which one you want and we will help you plan how to book. For a stay next to the Qianguqing show, the food street and the shopping street, see Where to Stay.
If you want city-style nightlife, Jiuzhaigou is not it. For bars, live music and late-night food, spend a night in Chengdu.

Go Further
Jiuzhaigou does not have a menu of easy day trips the way Chengdu does. The valley itself takes a full day, the roads out of it are long, and the one big second act is Huanglong, a separate park with its own tickets, its own opening hours and a higher altitude. Most people reach this corner of Sichuan from Chengdu. Plan the order of the two parks carefully. It matters more than any single sight.
🌈 Huanglong Day Trip: Is Huanglong Worth It After Jiuzhaigou?
Short answer: yes, if you have a spare day and you are happy at altitude. Huanglong is the other big name in this region, famous for its colourful terraced pools. The highest and largest pool group in the park, Wucaichi (Five-Colour Pools), sits at 3,576 m (Aba Prefecture government page). Jiuzhaigou's visitor notice quotes 2,000 to 3,100 m for its scenic area, so at 3,576 m Huanglong's Wucaichi is above that range.
What the official notices say (Songpan County government notice, 1 June 2026): the ropeway starts at the same time as the park opens. A Sichuan provincial tourism-bureau page from November 2024 says the sightseeing shuttle ran 8:00 to 16:30. That is a notice from an earlier season, so confirm it on the official channel.
Off-season. A March 2024 report (news from the Huanglong management bureau, republished by the Sichuan provincial tourism department) says December to May is Huanglong's off-season each year, because the scenery's water volume depends on season and rainfall. We found no official statement of the 2026-27 off-season ticket price, so we quote none.
How to book. A March 2025 Women's Day promotion (Sichuan provincial tourism department page, 5 Mar 2025) described real-name reservations through Aba Tourism (阿坝旅游网), the scenic area's website or its WeChat account, with ropeway and sightseeing-shuttle tickets bought separately. This is an event notice, not a confirmed 2026 booking guide. Check the current process, ticket inclusions and passport requirements before booking.
Getting there. Huanglong Jiuzhai railway station is 27 km from Huanglong, a 35-minute drive (Jiuzhaigou official site). The station sits at 2,977 m. The Jiuhuang airport shuttle also runs straight to Huanglong, Mounigou and Chuanzhusi. Train times and fares: see How to Get to Jiuzhaigou.
Your train station is nearly 1,000 m higher than the Jiuzhaigou gate
A fast train from Chengdu drops you at Huanglong Jiuzhai station at 2,977 m. The Jiuzhaigou valley entrance is at about 2,000 m. The station is 977 m above the Jiuzhaigou gate (our arithmetic). This compares the two locations; it is not the altitude gain on the train journey. Keep your arrival day gentle: do not schedule a hard hike for the afternoon you arrive.
Timing. We recommend a morning visit to leave more time. Ticket sales stop at 16:30; the last uphill ropeway service is at 17:00 and the last downhill service at 17:30. Check that your planned route fits these times before choosing an afternoon visit.
What we could not confirm for Huanglong (ask before you plan around it)
These items had no readable official source on 4 October 2026, so there are no numbers here:
- The 2026 ropeway price. The only official price we found is from 2021, and we will not use a five-year-old number.
- When the 2026 peak season ends, and the off-season ticket price.
- How many days ahead you need to book.
- Whether a foreign passport works in the booking system, and whether you can buy a ticket at the gate.
- The Huanglong management bureau's own website. The address we tried would not load.
- Whether the Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong bus still runs, and its current timetable and fare. The only details we found are in a March 2024 report (see the next section).
Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we will help you plan this and tell you how to book each piece.
🧭 Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong: Which Order, and Can You Do Both in One Day?
Do not do both in one day. The official Jiuzhaigou one-day route needs real stamina on its own, the valley's entry window closes at 14:00, and Huanglong stops selling tickets at 16:30.
The order we would pick: Jiuzhaigou first, Huanglong last.
- Jiuzhaigou is the scarce ticket. Daily entry is capped at 41,000 people in peak season (1 April to 15 November), and once the day sells out, it is sold out. Lock that date first and fit everything else around it.
- Altitude builds. The valley entrance is at 2,000 m, and Jiuzhaigou's visitor notice quotes 2,000 to 3,100 m for the scenic area. Huanglong's Wucaichi is at 3,576 m. Giving your body a night or two at the lower altitude first is the gentle way to do it.
- Huanglong sits next to the train. The station is 35 minutes from the park, so finishing there makes the trip back to Chengdu simple.
The official distance from Huanglong Jiuzhai station to the Jiuzhaigou scenic area is 93 km, about 2 hours. If you go from Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong by way of the station, that adds up to about 2 hours 35 minutes of driving. That is our arithmetic, not an official figure, so ask for a door-to-door time before you book a car.
A direct bus from Jiuzhaigou. A March 2024 report (news from the Huanglong management bureau, republished by the Sichuan provincial tourism department on 20 March 2024) says a bus runs from Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong. It leaves the Jiuzhaigou bus station (九寨沟客运站) at 7:40, and you buy the ticket at that station. The ride takes about 140 minutes, and the bus reaches Huanglong at about 10:00. Visitors then have about 5 hours in the park. The return bus leaves at 15:30 from the scenic area's car park No. 3 (三号停车场). The fare in the report is ¥47 per person one way. This is a 2024 report. We have not confirmed that the bus still runs, or its current times and fare, so check at the Jiuzhaigou bus station before you plan around it.
🛟 Backup Plan: Shenxianchi and Jiawuhai When Jiuzhaigou Is Sold Out
When tickets run short, the park's 2 October 2026 notice names two other places in Jiuzhaigou County: Shenxianchi (神仙池) and Jiawuhai · Panda Garden (甲勿海·熊猫园). The park's three-day route page puts Shenxianchi 58 km from the county town, about 1.5 hours by car. We have no official ticket price or opening hours for either place, so we will not quote any. Ask us to check both before you commit a day.
If you have flexible dates, the better fix is to avoid the holiday weeks: the daily headcounts are in the Best Time section. If pandas are the goal, Chengdu's base has its own ticket guide.
🏔️ Songpan and Chuanzhusi: What We Can Tell You
We keep this short because the official sources are thin.
- Chuanzhusi (川主寺, Chuānzhǔsì) is a town at the junction of the roads to Songpan, Hongyuan, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. The Jiuzhaigou official site calls it a hub for "dining, lodging and parking", and "the road you must pass" to Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong and the northwest Sichuan grasslands. Think of it as a transit stop on a route, not a destination.
- Songpan station is one of the stops on the Chengdu East line, and the park shuttle serves it (see Getting Around). Check the schedule and price in the "九旅悦行" mini-program.
- Songpan Ancient Town: we found no official ticket price, opening hours or transport page, so we will not guess. If it is on your wish list, ask us on WhatsApp and we will check it for your dates.
🛏️ Where to Stay Near Jiuzhaigou: The Gate Area, Zhangzha and Chuanzhusi
Short answer: stay in Zhangzha town or at the gate. Every hotel is outside the park (see the box in Getting Around). The valley sits in Zhangzha Town (漳扎镇), Jiuzhaigou County. The park's accommodation page names these places, with the park's own distances. It links out to third-party booking sites, so we give no prices.
| Area / hotel (as named by the park) | Official distance or note | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| At the valley mouth. Jiuzhaigou Guibin Lou (九寨沟贵宾楼), four-star | At the park entrance, 20 m from the main gate | The shortest morning. Best when entry time is tight |
| Zhangzha town centre. Jiuzhai Tianyuan Howard Johnson Resort (九寨天源豪生度假酒店) | Right of the town centre, about 10 minutes by car to the park. Next to the Jiuzhai Qianguqing show, the food street and the shopping street | Dinner and an evening out without a long drive |
| Zhangzha town. Jiuzhai Luneng Hilton Resort (九寨鲁能希尔顿度假酒店) | 14 km from the park | A big resort stay with a drive to the gate |
| Further out. Jiuzhaigou Banyan Tree (九寨沟悦榕庄) | About 45 minutes by car from the park | A quiet, luxury stay. You pay for it in morning travel time; confirm the transfer time before booking |
| Chuanzhusi. Hub town | The park does not say it is a good base (see Songpan and Chuanzhusi) | A stop on the way to or from Huanglong |
The park also says there are hotels of all grades outside the scenic area, so these four are not the whole market. We have not priced any of them. Ask us for options within your budget and we will help you plan.
Our pick: sleep near the gate or in Zhangzha. The park's entry window runs to 14:00 (see opening hours), so a 45-minute drive each morning eats into it, and being 20 m from the gate is a real advantage on a long day. Booking a hotel as a foreigner involves a passport check; the accommodation registration guide explains it, including what to do in a private rental or with friends. We can book hotels for you on WhatsApp.
🗺️ Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong Itinerary: 3 Days
These plans use only the official hours and distances above. For what to do inside the valley, see Part 3.
Day 1: Arrive, sleep low, do nothing hard
- Travel in. Your options (train plus park shuttle, flight, long coach) are in How to Get to Jiuzhaigou. Flights can be cancelled in winter snow, so leave a buffer on the way out.
- Check in near the gate or in Zhangzha. Keep the first evening quiet.
Day 2: Jiuzhaigou, the whole day
- Arrive at the opening time confirmed for your date. The July 2026 peak-season notice gives 8:00, while the 2026 National Day notice gives 7:30. Both stop entry at 14:00; check a new notice for off-season dates.
- The official one-day sample route starts at 7:00 from the gate. It is a sample, not a rule. The official site warns that a full day needs good fitness.
- Follow your route from the valley section. The shuttle runs like a bus and stops only at set stations.
Day 3: Huanglong, then the train
- Aim to be at Huanglong at opening (8:00). Ticket sales stop at 16:30.
- Confirm whether ropeway and sightseeing-shuttle tickets are separate, and check their current prices before booking.
- Afterwards, Huanglong Jiuzhai station is 35 minutes away for a train back toward Chengdu East. Book that train on the 12306 English website.

Know Before You Go
🧠 Culture, altitude & phone numbers — the fine print
🤝 Tibetan and Qiang culture: manners that matter
This corner of Sichuan is part of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, so you will see Tibetan villages, prayer flags and temples as well as the big tourist sites. The official pages give almost no etiquette rules, so the points below are general courtesy, not official policy.
- Ask before you photograph people. This matters most for monks, and for anyone praying or working.
- Walk clockwise around prayer wheels, stupas and mani walls. That is the common practice at Tibetan sites.
- Dress modestly and keep your voice down at temples. Follow the signs in each place.
- For more on Tibetan places elsewhere on your route, see Lhasa and Shangri-La.
⛰️ Altitude, weather and what to wear
What the official pages say:
- The scenic area is at 2,000 to 3,100 m. The valley entrance is at about 2,000 m. Wucaichi in Huanglong is at 3,576 m, and Huanglong Jiuzhai station is at 2,977 m.
- For Jiuzhaigou's higher stops (Long Lake, the Five-Colour Pool inside Jiuzhaigou, and the Primeval Forest), the park's 27 September 2025 notice advises against drinking large amounts of water or exercising hard.
- Weather is changeable, with big day-night differences and occasional showers. UV is strong. The park recommends dressing in layers, "onion style" (28 Sep 2026).
General advice, not from the official pages:
- Take it slowly on the first day. Keep the first evening quiet, and avoid heavy drinking.
- If you have a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor before you book.
- A headache that gets worse, nausea or breathlessness at rest are reasons to stop climbing and go down, not to push through.
- If your route already included a high place such as Lhasa or Shangri-La, you may adapt faster, but nothing in the official sources promises that.

❓ FAQ — straight answers to what everyone actually asks
Can I visit Jiuzhaigou on the 240-hour visa-free transit?
No. Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are in Aba Prefecture. Sichuan's 240-hour transit area covers only 11 cities (Chengdu, Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Yibin, Ya'an, Meishan and Ziyang). Aba is not on that list. The 30-day visa-free entry applies by nationality; check the 30-day visa-free list and the 240-hour transit areas. If anything is unclear, call the 12367 immigration hotline before you book. (Full breakdown: Part 1.)
Do I need to book Jiuzhaigou tickets in advance?
Yes. Every visitor must reserve under a real name, and "no reservation, no trip" is the official line. The park advises booking 7 to 14 days ahead. During the 2026 National Day holiday, tickets for 3 to 6 October were sold out. If a day sells out, the mini-program has a waitlist, and returned tickets are released at 8:00 and 17:00 each day. Free and discounted visitors must reserve too. (Steps: Part 3.)
How much does Jiuzhaigou cost?
In peak season (1 April to 15 November) it is ¥190 for the ticket plus ¥90 for the shuttle, ¥280 per person. Insurance is ¥10, optional. From 16 November the official ticket page shows ¥80 plus ¥80, but the 2026-27 off-season notice had not been published on 4 October 2026. Huanglong is separate: ¥170 full price, ¥85 half price in peak season. (Sources: Part 1.)
Can foreigners buy Jiuzhaigou tickets with a passport?
The park's website mentions "booking by passport number" and a "dedicated channel for foreign visitors" in a February 2025 news item. The step-by-step passport process is not published. Call 0837-7769999 or 400-088-6969 (press 1), or send us your dates and we will help you plan the booking and tell you where to ask.
How do I get from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou?
Most people take the high-speed train from Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai station (fastest 1 h 39 min on one official page, about 2 hours on another), then the park's direct shuttle to the gate, about 2 hours. A 27 September 2025 park notice listed direct flights from Chengdu and Beijing to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport; check availability for your dates with the airline. Other options include a long-distance bus (about ¥168 in that notice, with a published road journey of 9 to 10 hours) and a private car. Check train fares on the 12306 English website. (Full table: Part 1.)
Is Huanglong worth visiting, and what does it cost?
Huanglong is the second big park in the region, known for its colourful pools. The highest pool group, Wucaichi, is at 3,576 m. In peak season (from 1 June 2026) the ticket is ¥170 full price or ¥85 half price. The park opens at 8:00, and the ropeway starts then too. Ticket sales stop at 16:30. We could not find the 2026 ropeway price, so check the official channel. Give it its own morning.
Can I see Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong in one day?
Not sensibly. The official one-day Jiuzhaigou route already asks for good fitness, and the valley's entry window closes at 14:00. Huanglong opens at 8:00 and stops selling tickets at 16:30. From Huanglong Jiuzhai station it is 93 km (about 2 hours) to Jiuzhaigou and 27 km (35 minutes) to Huanglong. Give each park its own day.
Can I stay inside Jiuzhaigou National Park?
No. Overnight stays in the park are banned. Most visitors stay in Zhangzha town or at the gate: Guibin Lou is 20 m from the main gate, Howard Johnson is about 10 minutes by car, Hilton is 14 km away and Banyan Tree is about 45 minutes away. (Details: Part 4.)
How bad is altitude sickness at Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong?
It depends on you. The scenic area is at 2,000 to 3,100 m, Wucaichi in Huanglong is at 3,576 m, and Huanglong Jiuzhai station is at 2,977 m. For the higher stops the park asks you not to drink large amounts of water and not to exercise hard. Move slowly, rest on arrival, and go down if a headache gets worse. Ask your doctor first if you have a heart or lung condition.
Can I pay with cash, or do I need a phone wallet?
Most people pay by phone, but cash is still legal tender: since 1 February 2026, staffed businesses must accept it. See Is cash accepted in China? for what that means in practice. Park tickets are booked online in advance under your name, through WeChat mini-programs, so sort that out before you go.
When is the best time to visit Jiuzhaigou?
The park calls October the most colourful season of the year, but National Day week is the busiest: it hit its 41,000 cap on 1 and 2 October 2026. Mid-September weekdays were mostly 13,000 to 22,000 visitors a day. Summer has an official average of 18°C and a rain risk. In winter the park says Long Lake and Panda Lake freeze to a depth of 60 cm while the other lakes do not freeze completely, and the 2024-25 off-season entry window was shorter (8:30 to 14:00).
