Do I need to book Chengdu Panda Base tickets in advance?
Yes, with two exceptions. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) runs on online real-name reservation. Visitors aged 60 and over, and children aged 6 or under or shorter than 1.3 m, can enter without a reservation by showing a valid ID. Everyone else books ahead, and a day's tickets can sell out.
The base says that if you can't pay online for a special reason, you can buy at its on-site windows while tickets remain, so don't rely on it. Entry is capped at 85,000 visitors a day. In its 2026 National Day notice the base split that into 45,000 morning places and 40,000 afternoon places, and said it pauses entry when 36,000 people are inside at once.
How to book Chengdu Panda Base tickets with a foreign passport
Tickets go on sale up to 14 days ahead. The base's ticket page lists the passport among the IDs it accepts, and sells one ticket per person on one ID.
- Pick a channel. The base names its own WeChat official account and mini-program, plus "officially authorised platforms". On its English page those are Trip.com, Meituan, Douyin, Tongcheng Travel and the Chengdu Scenic Shuttle Bus WeChat account. If you don't read Chinese, note that the English page names the Trip.com app; the Chinese page names the Ctrip app (携程旅行) instead. Travel agencies use a separate web portal.
- Choose the date and the session. You buy a morning ticket or an afternoon ticket and enter once, inside that session's window (see the hours below).
- Enter your name and passport number exactly as printed, then pay.
- On the day, scan the original passport at the lane for visitors with original ID. If you left it behind, another lane checks a photo of your ID.
- Ignore anyone selling "fast entry". The base warns against paid fast-track offers.
We haven't completed a booking on these systems ourselves, so we can't say what the booking screens ask for beyond the ID.
Bought from somewhere that isn't on the list?
The base's 2026 National Day notice warns that tickets from unofficial channels may not get you in and may not be refundable, and its ticket page prohibits unauthorised third-party selling. Check that the seller is one of the platforms above before you pay.
Chengdu Panda Base ticket prices and who gets in free
| Ticket | Price | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥55 | Aged 18 (exclusive) to 59 (inclusive); ages 7 to 18 fall under the student ticket |
| Student | ¥27 | Current students up to undergraduate level, not adult education. Ages 7 to 18 enter on ID alone; over 18 show a student card and ID |
| Senior | Free, no booking | Age 60 and over, original ID |
| Child | Free, no booking | Aged 6 or under, or under 1.3 m |
The free-with-booking list is for people holding Chinese-issued certificates, such as military personnel, people with disabilities and tour guides, plus first-time visitors from Taiwan. It has no category for foreign tourists. The page doesn't limit the senior and child exemptions to Chinese citizens, but it doesn't mention foreign visitors either, so bring your passport and call 028-83510033 if you're unsure. It also doesn't say whether a foreign student card is accepted. These tickets cover the Chengdu base only, not Dujiangyan Panda Valley.
Chengdu Panda Base opening hours and entry sessions
| Months | Morning ticket: entry | Afternoon ticket: entry | Clearing starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| March to October | 7:30 to 12:00 | 12:00 to 17:00 | 18:00 |
| November to February | 8:00 to 12:00 | 12:00 to 16:30 | 17:30 |
You enter once, inside the window printed on your ticket. The base asks afternoon-ticket holders not to arrive early, to avoid long waits. The park clears from 18:00 (17:30 in winter), so by our arithmetic a morning ticket lets you stay up to about ten hours and an afternoon ticket about six at most.
When are the pandas active? The base doesn't say. It publishes no feeding or viewing timetable, and its own science page says pandas spend most of the day eating and digesting, more than ten hours of it. There is no official best hour. The one thing the base's own numbers support is that the morning session gives you the most time inside.
Pick your gate too. In its 2026 National Day notice the base said the South Gate gets heavy crowds over the holiday, advised public transport to the West Gate, where the queue is shorter, and noted that the West Gate has no car park for self-drivers.
Mondays and other closures at the Panda Base
- No. 6 Panda Villa is closed every Monday except public holidays, under a rotation trial for animal welfare. The Panda Art Museum also closes on Mondays except public holidays.
- Panda Tower (熊猫塔, the Bamboo Tower on the base's English pages) is free but needs a reservation. It is open 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, and entry pauses when 200 people are inside. Bad weather can close it.
- The base says areas can close for weather, animal care or maintenance, and some animals may not be visible. Its pages list no closing day for the park as a whole.
Getting to the Panda Base from downtown Chengdu
The base has two gates: the South Gate (1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, 成华区熊猫大道1375号) and the West Gate. These routes come from the base's own transportation page.
| Route | Detail |
|---|---|
| South Gate by metro | Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue, exit A, then shuttle bus 408 to the gate. Or Line 3 to Zoo station, then bus 655 or 87. |
| West Gate by metro | Metro Line 3 to Junqu General Hospital, exit B, walk 20 m to the bus stop, then shuttle bus 409 (about 10 minutes). Or buses 110, 110A or 659 to Yulei Road Cuiwei Intersection, then walk 600 m. |
| Taxi (the base's estimates) | About ¥40 and 25 to 35 minutes from Chunxi Road; about ¥40 and 25 to 30 minutes from Chengdu East Railway Station; about ¥100 from Shuangliu Airport; about ¥200 from Tianfu Airport. |
| Scenic shuttle bus | Special buses run from Chunxi Road and Kuanzhai Alley. The base gives no fares or times; look them up on the "Scenic Shuttle Bus | Chengdu Bus" mini-program or the Chengdu Tourist Sightseeing Bus WeChat account. |
| Driving | Park at Bolinghui underground car park and take shuttle D569 to the West Gate, or park at Yingying car park and walk about 15 minutes to the South Gate. |
Inside the base: sightseeing bus, guides and lockers
- Sightseeing bus: ¥30 per person for anyone over 1.3 m, valid for the day at any stop, running between the South and West Gates. Children aged 6 or under, or under 1.3 m, ride free on a lap, one per adult. Sales run 7:30 to 17:30 from March to October and 8:00 to 17:00 from November to February. You can buy on the day or up to 14 days ahead on the base's mini-program.
- Guides: staffed guide points at both gates, 7:30 to 17:30 (028-83510022); the base lists no fee. A self-service audio guide costs ¥30 a day for the whole park, in Chinese or English, rented by scanning a WeChat or Alipay code (hotline 400-090-1168). Unlicensed paid guiding is banned inside.
- Lockers: free self-service lockers at both gates, plus manual storage if they're full.
Refunds
A ticket is valid only on the date and session you chose, and a used ticket can't be refunded. For an unused ticket, ask for a refund through the channel you bought from. The base's page says you can do that from 17:00 on the visit day for the next 30 days, after which the ticket is cancelled with no refund. The rule has applied since 27 August 2026, and the page says nothing about cancelling before the visit day.
