🧭 TL;DR — the honest bottom line
Changsha (长沙, Chángshā) is the capital of Hunan, and its best sights are free or cheap, but almost all of them sit behind a reservation. A Han-dynasty tomb exhibition at the Hunan Museum is free. A mountain and a river island are free. An academy at the foot of that mountain charges ¥40. Most visitors book all three in advance, each in a different place. Around them you get stinky tofu, snack streets with long lines, and a city that says it wants to be a "24-hour city". Give the city 2 days, or 3 if you add Shaoshan. Zhangjiajie is a separate trip.
Two things to sort before you book anything: your visa route (all of Hunan is inside the 240-hour transit area) and your reservations (the steps are in Part 3).
Tell us your dates and where you are flying from, and we'll help you line up flights, hotels, train tickets, a guide or a private car with driver. For the sight reservations we show you how to book. (One message, no obligation.)
Message us →📌 Every price, hour and rule below comes from official pages (the museum, the academy, the scenic area, the metro operator and government sites), checked 4 October 2026. Older notices carry their year in the text, because rules change; read the source date before you plan around a number. Where two official pages disagree, this guide shows both and does not pick a side.
Before You Go
🛂 Do You Need a Visa for Changsha? Two Visa-Free Routes
Short answer: whether you need a visa depends on your passport and itinerary. Check the 50-country list for 30-day visa-free entry and the 57-country list for 240-hour transit. Changsha Huanghua Airport (CSX) is on China's list of 240-hour visa-free transit ports. The permitted area for Hunan is the whole province. That puts Changsha, Zhangjiajie and Shaoshan all inside the area. (The National Immigration Administration publishes its port table as an image. Our visa pages read it, and we checked them on 1 October 2026.)
Here are the two routes and their conditions.
| 30-day visa-free | 240-hour (10-day) transit | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | 50 countries, including the UK and Canada (since 17 February 2026), most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Brazil. The US is not on the list. | A longer list that includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam. |
| Longest stay | 30 days per entry, counted from 00:00 on the day after you enter. | 240 hours, counted from 00:00 on the day after you enter. |
| Ticket | No return or onward ticket among the official conditions. | An onward ticket from China to a third country or region, with a confirmed date and itinerary, leaving within 240 hours. |
| Where you can go | The notices we read do not limit you to a list of provinces. | Inside each province's permitted area. For Hunan that is the whole province. Hunan has two entry ports: Changsha Huanghua and Zhangjiajie Hehua. |
| End date | 31 December 2026 for 48 of the 50 countries. Russia: 31 December 2027. Brunei: no end date. | No end date in the sources we read. |
Full details are on two pages: China 30-day visa-free countries and 240-hour transit areas by province.
If you are a US citizen
You are not on the 30-day list. You can still arrive without a visa on the 240-hour transit. The word to focus on is transit: the country or region you arrive from must differ from the country or region you travel to next. A US–China–US itinerary does not qualify. The same conditions apply to you as to everyone else on the 240-hour list. Our guide for US citizens covers the rest.
Does Hong Kong or Macao count as the third place for the 240-hour transit?
The rule says "a third country or region". None of the official pages we read says whether Hong Kong or Macao count. Many people assume they do. That is an inference, not an official statement. If your plan depends on it, call the National Immigration Administration hotline, +86 12367 (English available), before you book.
You can come in through another city
You do not have to land in Changsha. You can enter at any 240-hour port and then move between permitted areas. Hubei (Wuhan) and Guangdong (Guangzhou) are open in full. Guangxi is open for a list of named cities, and Guilin is one of them. Zhangjiajie is in Hunan, so it is inside your area from the day you arrive. Check your onward flight, too: for Guangdong the official table says you may leave by any open port, but for other provinces we found no exit rule, so confirm that your departure airport is on the table before you book.
Two small things before you fly
- Arrival card. Since 20 November 2025 you can fill in the foreigner arrival card online before you travel (Beijing foreign affairs office notice, 24 November 2025). If you cannot complete it online in advance, you can scan the QR code, use a smart device or fill in a paper card at the port. Our page has the steps: China arrival card.
- Registration. A hotel registers you. If you stay anywhere else, read accommodation registration.
🗓️ Best Time to Visit Changsha
We have no monthly temperature table for Changsha from an official source, so we do not print one. What we do have comes from the Hunan Meteorological Bureau, and it is enough to avoid the worst weeks.
| Period | What the Hunan Meteorological Bureau says |
|---|---|
| Mid-June to early July | Plum-rain season ("meiyu"): days of rain, high temperature and high humidity. The bureau's explainer is from 2009 and describes the Yangtze middle and lower reaches. It says the rain belt reaches south to the basins of the two lakes. |
| Mid-July to late August | After the plum rains end in mid-July comes the hot midsummer, which runs to late August. |
| October | Hunan is in a subtropical monsoon climate zone. In past years October was mostly clear and crisp ("autumn-sky" weather). But autumn is the handover from summer to winter air, and a strong cold front can drop temperatures fast (bureau article, November 2021). |
| Other months | No official figure in our sources. Check a 10-day forecast before you pack. |
The October warning in numbers. October 2021 is the bureau's own example of a sudden swing. Changsha's daily high fell from 36.8°C on 5 October to 15.2°C on 11 October. During that National Day week the province-wide average was 26.9°C, which was 6.6°C above normal and the warmest for that week since 1961. That year was an extreme, not the usual. It still shows why you pack a warm layer and a light one in October.
Our read, not an official ranking: if you can choose, avoid mid-June to early July for the rain, avoid midsummer for the heat, and treat October as the strongest option with a layered bag.
Holiday weeks are busy. We found no visitor counts for the city, so we give none. Book the Hunan Museum, Yuelu Mountain and Yuelu Academy ahead in any busy week; the steps are in Part 3.
✈️ How to Get to Changsha: Flights and High-Speed Rail
By air: fly into Changsha Huanghua International Airport (CSX). It is one of Hunan's two 240-hour transit ports (the other is Zhangjiajie Hehua). How to get into town is under Changsha Airport to City Center.
By high-speed rail: the main station for bullet trains is Changsha South Railway Station (长沙火车南站). It sits on Metro Lines 2 and 4. The older Changsha Railway Station is also on Line 2, according to a city government page from 2014.
Train times, fares and journey times: we give none. Look them up on the 12306 English website. If Changsha is one stop on a longer trip, check trains to Wuhan, Guangzhou or Guilin there. For changes and refunds, read 12306 refund and change fees. Carry the same passport you booked with.
If you plan to ride a train with a power bank, read the power bank rules first.
💴 Changsha Travel Budget: What the Official Prices Say
We do not give a daily budget. Hotels and meals have no official price list, so any figure from us would be a guess. Below are the prices that do come from official pages. Hotels, food and taxis are marked "varies, no official figure".
| What | Price | Notes (source date) |
|---|---|---|
| Hunan Museum, permanent exhibitions (Mawangdui and others) | Free | Real-name booking needed; see Hunan Museum. Museum website, checked 4 October 2026. |
| Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle | Free | Booking needed on the official WeChat account; see Yuelu Mountain. Scenic area notice, 15 March 2026. |
| Yuelu Academy | ¥40 full price, ¥20 half price | Separate ticket, booked on its own WeChat account; see Yuelu Academy. Academy website, checked 4 October 2026. |
| Yuelu Mountain East Gate cable car | ¥50 up, ¥40 down | Bought on site. May stop in rain. Scenic area notice, 30 September 2025. |
| Orange Isle sightseeing shuttle | No price in the notice we read | Sold in a mini-program or on site (notice of 30 September 2025). |
| Metro | From ¥2 for the first 6 km | Distance-based. Full rule under Metro Guide. Metro operator website, checked 4 October 2026. |
| Maglev Express (South Station to the airport) | ¥20 | Per a January 2024 city government notice. Check at the station. |
| Shaoshan (Mao Zedong's former residence) | Booking is free | The notice of 10 December 2025 does not state an admission price. |
| Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie (core area) | ¥236 ticket plus park eco-bus, or ¥165 ticket only | Valid 4 days. The park's page cites an entrance-ticket rule effective 1 January 2025 and an eco-bus pricing rule effective 1 January 2026. It says to follow the latest posted price. Details under Zhangjiajie. |
| Hotels, food, taxis and Didi | Varies, no official figure | We found no official price list. |
What this tells you: the big sights in Changsha cost little or nothing to enter. The booking is the work, not the ticket price. Your budget swings come from your hotel, your meals and how many paid trips you add.

Arrival & Essentials
Do the first two things at home: get online, and get paying. Then you land with a working phone and a plan for the metro.
📱 Internet in Changsha: Install an eSIM before you fly
Install a travel eSIM before you leave home, and keep your normal SIM for calls and texts. Many travel eSIMs send your data through servers outside the mainland. That is the usual reason apps such as Google Maps and WhatsApp work on them. Check the provider's own China page before you buy, because plans differ. We do not name providers or quote prices here.
- Buy the eSIM at home, on your own Wi-Fi.
- Install it by QR code before the flight, and leave it switched off.
- Switch it on when you land. Test one map and one message before you leave the airport.
You will want WhatsApp working on day one, because you will need it for hotel messages and for reaching us.
💳 How to Pay in Changsha
Most people pay by phone, but cash is still legal tender: since 1 February 2026, staffed businesses must accept it. Read the detail in Is cash accepted in China?
- At home, install Alipay or WeChat and follow the app's own steps to add your overseas bank card.
- Do it before the flight, so any identity check happens on your home network.
- Carry a second card and a little cash as a backup.
We print no payment limits. The apps set the rules, and the rules change.
A local guide exists. In May 2024 the Hunan branch of the People's Bank of China and the foreign exchange authority issued a Payment Services Guide for Foreigners Visiting Hunan. According to a Hunan news report of 6 May 2024, it covers four payment types: bank cards, cash, mobile payment and the digital yuan. We did not find the full text, so we only report that it exists. The same report tells of one British traveler in Changsha who linked a UK bank card to WeChat with help from a bank clerk. That is one person's case, not a policy.
🛬 Changsha Airport to City Center: Metro, Maglev or Taxi
All times below come from the Changsha metro operator's timetable (read 4 October 2026) and a January 2024 city government notice. Check on the day, as timetables change.
| Option | How it works | Times | Cost | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Metro Line 6 | Board at Huanghua Airport T1T2 station (黄花机场T1T2站), toward Xiejiaqiao. The line passes Martyrs' Park South (烈士公园南), the Hunan Museum station. | First train 6:30, last train 23:00 from the airport. | Distance-based, from ¥2. We found no official fare for this trip. | You land between those times and your hotel is on the line, or you are going to the museum. |
| 2. Maglev Express, then metro | Maglev from Maglev Airport Station (磁浮机场站) to Maglev High-Speed Rail Station (磁浮高铁站), which is Changsha South Railway Station. Then change to Metro Line 2 or 4. There is one intermediate stop: Langli (磁浮㮾梨站). Use the Chinese station name when you check the timetable. | From the airport: first 7:00. Last train 22:30 on weekdays that are not the day before a holiday. On weekends and holidays (including the day before a holiday): 23:00. | ¥20 for the whole trip, ¥10 for each of the two segments (January 2024 notice). | You are staying near Changsha South, or you are catching a train there. |
| 3. Taxi or ride-hailing app | We found no official page on airport taxis or ride-hailing, so we give no rank, queue or app details. Have your hotel name and address in Chinese characters on your phone. | No official figure. | No official figure. | You land after the last train, you carry heavy bags, or your hotel is far from a station. |
Maglev: more detail.
- Running time: when the maglev opened for trial runs in 2016, the planned time for the full trip was 19 minutes 30 seconds. Treat it as "about 20 minutes", not as a current timetable.
- Other direction (city to airport): the first train is 7:00. The last train is 22:10 on weekdays. On weekends and holidays the operator's timetable says 22:40 for the last train from the high-speed rail station, while the January 2024 notice says 22:30. The two sources differ, so plan for the earlier time.
- Tickets: the 2024 notice mentions advance ticket points in the Wuyi Square metro station hall and in the passage from the high-speed rail station to the maglev station. Maglev hotline: 0731-86859898 (2024 notice).
- Onward on Line 2 from Changsha South: toward Guangda, first train 6:39, last 23:44. Toward Meixi Lake West, first train 6:33, last 23:03.
Why some times in this guide carry a year
Several official pages we found are old. The maglev fare is from a January 2024 city notice that was issued for the Spring Festival travel period. The maglev timetable comes from the operator's page read on 4 October 2026, with the older notice shown where the two sources differ. The metro and maglev timetable pages on the operator's site show no date, so we treat them as current as of 4 October 2026. Where a page is old, we write the year in the sentence. We could not open the Huanghua Airport website or the maglev operator's own site, so we do not quote an airport page.
If your plan depends on a late arrival, tell us the flight number. We can help with flights, hotels and a private car with driver, and a car is simplest after the last train.
Send flight →🚇 Getting Around Changsha: Metro Guide
The metro is the simplest way to cross the city. Signs are in Chinese and English, and stops are announced in both languages (Hunan government English page, 28 March 2025).
Fares. The operator's rule: ¥2 for the first 6 km (6 km included). From 6 to 16 km, ¥1 more for every 5 km. From 16 to 30 km, ¥1 more for every 7 km. Beyond 30 km, ¥1 more for every 9 km. This rule does not cover the Maglev Express.
Free rides. Children under 14 and people aged 65 and over ride free with a valid ID. The operator's page lists ID card, household register, birth certificate and preferential card as examples. It does not name a passport. Children 1.3 m and under need an adult with them.
How to pay. The Hunan government English page lists these:
- Alipay "Travel" mini-program
- WeChat "City Pass" mini-program
- Hunan Xing Yi Ka Tong app
- "My Changsha" app
- Changsha Metro app
- Hebao payment
- A single-journey ticket from a ticket vending machine or ticket counter
Can I tap a foreign bank card at the gate? We found no official statement; use Alipay or buy a single-journey ticket at the machine.
Hours. The Hunan English page gives a rough "6:30 to 23:00 daily on all lines". The operator's timetable shows later last trains at some stations. Example: on Line 2 from Changsha South toward Guangda the last train is 23:44. Trust the time shown for your station. Holidays bring changes: for Mid-Autumn and National Day 2026 the Changsha government English page (23 September 2026) lists extended hours to 24:00 on four dates, with one section of Line 3 (Hongqiao to Xiangtan North) running to 23:00, so check the operator for the dates you travel. Line 2 West Extension Phase II opened to passengers on 4 September 2026.
Metro hotline: 0731-86850000.
Lines you will use most:
- Line 6 goes to the airport and to the Hunan Museum.
- Lines 2 and 4 both stop at Changsha South Railway Station.
- Wuyi Square is on Lines 1 and 2.
- Yuelu Mountain: Line 2 to Yingwanzhen station for the East Gate, or Line 4 to Hunan University station for the South Gate. Details are in Part 3.

Things to Do in Changsha
The core of the guide. Changsha's best sights are free or cheap, and almost all of them sit behind a reservation: a Han-dynasty tomb exhibition that is free but releases its tickets at 20:00 sharp, a mountain and a river island that are free but bookable in one WeChat account, and an academy at the foot of that mountain that charges ¥40 and has its own account. Then the part everyone remembers: stinky tofu, street-food queues and a city that wants to stay awake all night. Every hard fact below comes from an official page. Where two official pages disagree, we show both. Older notices carry their year in the text.
🎫 Booking Cheat Sheet: Changsha's Reservation-Only Sights
Three of Changsha's headline sights take reservations, each booked in a different place. Most visitors should reserve in advance; the detailed sections explain the listed exemptions. Here is the whole picture before the detail. Prices are in the budget table.
| Place | Book how far ahead | Where to book | Foreign passport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunan Museum (Mawangdui) | Up to 5 days ahead, not counting today. Newest day's tickets released at 20:00 | Official WeChat service account or Alipay mini-program (the homepage also lists the museum website) | Yes, for booking and entry |
| Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle | Up to 3 days ahead (2025 notice) | WeChat official account 岳麓山 橘子洲旅游区 only | 2025 notice: pick a foreign document type. 2023 notice: register at the manual lane with your passport |
| Yuelu Academy | A four-day window including today (the academy's wording). Check which dates are open in the account | WeChat official account 岳麓书院 | Yes, booking by passport |
The museum and the academy require the original document used for booking. The September 2025 Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle notice lists QR-code entry or an ID-card scan; passport holders should confirm their entry procedure in the official account. Setting up WeChat or Alipay is covered in Part 2.
We can help you plan which day each reservation goes on, and tell you how to book each one. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates.
Plan my days →🏺 Hunan Museum Tickets and Booking: Mawangdui, free but on a clock
The Hunan Museum (湖南省博物馆) is free, normally closed on Mondays, and you must reserve a time slot in advance. The museum lists free admission to the Mawangdui Han Tombs display (长沙马王堆汉墓陈列), the "Hunan People" display (湖南人陈列) and its thematic displays (专题陈列). Check each temporary exhibition's own notice for admission details. The catch is the booking window. It is short, and the newest day's tickets are released at a fixed hour.
The basics (museum website, checked 4 October 2026):
- Address: 50 Dongfeng Road, Changsha (长沙市东风路50号).
- Hours: normally Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:00. The regular closing day is Monday. Holiday closures and extended hours follow the museum's notices.
- Price: free. Booking is real-name and by time slot.
- Metro: Line 6, Lieshi Park South (Hunan Museum) station (烈士公园南(湖南省博物馆)站), Exit 1A. The museum also lists Xiangya Hospital station, Exit 2.
- Luggage: free storage is available. The visit page also lists multilingual guide maps and Chinese-English exhibition booklets.
- Ticket hotline: 0731-84415833 or 0731-84475933, on opening days 9:00–17:00.
How to book, step by step
- Know your window. The museum lets you book 5 days ahead, not counting today. The newest day's tickets go on sale every day at 20:00. If your date matters, be ready at 20:00 on the day your window opens.
- Open the museum's official channel. The homepage lists three: the museum website, the official WeChat service account and the official Alipay mini-program. The "Visit" page (参观) lists only the WeChat service account and the Alipay mini-program for individual real-name timed booking. The two pages are worded differently, so if the website option is missing for you, use WeChat or Alipay. We did not find an account name in the pages we read, so start from hnmuseum.com and follow its links.
- Pick a date and a time slot. Slots are timed, and you enter at the slot you booked.
- Enter your name and passport. The museum says foreign visitors can use a foreign permanent resident ID card or a passport to book and to check in. Use the same document for booking and for entry.
- Bring the original document. The museum asks for the original of the ID used to make the booking, not a photo or a copy.
- Arrive within your booked slot and before the last-entry time for your date (16:00 on ordinary opening days).
Children: an adult must make the booking for them and also needs a reservation. One adult may bring up to two children under 14. The museum's page uses inconsistent wording for children aged exactly 14; confirm their booking category with the museum.
Walk-ins: on ordinary opening days, the museum's reservation exemption covers specific groups only (visitors aged 65 and over, people with disabilities, military personnel and families, veterans, among others). Their original certificates are checked, and the exemption is limited to the basic exhibitions. Holiday notices may override this exemption. Tourists should plan to book.
Long holidays: holiday notices can change the opening hours and the closing day, so read the notices on hnmuseum.com before you go. For example, the museum's notice for 1–7 October 2026 extends opening to 20:00 (last entry 19:00), keeps the museum open on Monday 5 October, moves that week's closing day to Thursday 8 October, and requires every visitor, including those with concessions, to reserve.
One of China's best-known tomb exhibitions is free, but you have a 5-day window and a 20:00 release
The Mawangdui Han Tombs exhibition costs nothing. The price you pay is planning. Booking opens only 5 days ahead (not counting today), the newest day's tickets are released at 20:00, and you need the original document you booked with. Set a reminder for 20:00, book your slot, and your passport is your ticket.
⛰️ Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle: free entry, one booking channel
Yuelu Mountain (岳麓山) and Orange Isle (橘子洲) are free, but you must book first, and the only official channel is one WeChat official account. The account is called 岳麓山 橘子洲旅游区. The scenic area's notice (30 September 2025) says every reservation must go through it and that bookings on other platforms are not valid. A notice from the same operator dated 15 March 2026 still says: book online first, then enter free.
Dates matter here. The detailed rules below come from the scenic area's September 2025 National Day notice (carried by Xinhunan and Changsha Fabu). We found no 2026 version of the full rules. Treat them as the best official guide, and check the account before you go.
How to book, step by step
- Book up to 3 days ahead in the 岳麓山 橘子洲旅游区 WeChat account (2025 notice).
- Choose the time slot. Entry is by slot. If you do not enter in your slot, you must book again. A booking can be cancelled up to 2 hours before the slot.
- Fill in the visitor details. The form asks for name, ID number and mobile number. One person can book for up to 4 people.
- Foreign visitors: two official notes, two dates.
- September 2025 (scenic area notice): foreign visitors can pick the matching document type in the booking system.
- April 2023 (Yuelu District government notice): foreign visitors can register with a valid passport at the manual lane at the entrance, then enter.
- Neither notice says whether a foreign mobile number works in the form. We found no 2026 statement on this either.
- No booking, no entry. The 2023 notice says visitors without a booking, or outside their slot, cannot enter.
Opening hours, cable car and the shuttle (September 2025 notice)
- Yuelu Mountain: 06:00–22:00. Orange Isle: 07:00–22:00. The notice does not give a last-entry time.
- East Gate cable car (东门索道): bought on site only, 9:00–22:00, with prices in the budget table. It can stop in rain. The mountain slide (滑道) was being renovated and was not open.
- Orange Isle sightseeing shuttle: buy ahead in the 龙骧橘子洲 mini-program, or buy on site. The notice gives no price.
Getting there by metro (2025 notice)
- Line 2 to Yingwanzhen station (溁湾镇站) for the East Gate.
- Line 4 to Hunan University station (湖南大学站) for the South Gate.
- Metro timetable: the last trains at Hunan University station are 23:27 and 23:32 (the first trains are 6:32 and 6:36). The mountain closes at 22:00, so you can leave by train, but plan to be back at the station before 23:27.
What there is to see
The scenic area names Aiwan Pavilion (爱晚亭) on Yuelu Mountain and the Orange Isle Youth Art Sculpture (橘子洲青年艺术雕塑) on the island. We found no official page on whether the sculpture has its own ticket or opening hours, so we give none.
🎓 Yuelu Academy Tickets and Opening Hours
Yuelu Academy (岳麓书院) sits at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, is run by Hunan University, and has its own ticket and its own booking. Free entry to the mountain does not cover the academy. It costs ¥40 and has a separate WeChat account.
Ticket prices
- Full price: ¥40 per person per entry.
- Half price: ¥20 for visitors aged 60–64 and full-time students at undergraduate level and below, with valid supporting documents.
- Free: the academy lists free admission for Chinese citizens under 18, visitors aged 65 and over, people with disabilities and eligible military groups. They swap a valid document for a free ticket.
Watch the wording. The "under 18, free" line applies to Chinese citizens. The page does not say how it applies to foreign children, and it does not say whether the other discount lines apply to foreign visitors. Ask the academy's account before you assume a discount.
How to book, step by step
- Open the WeChat official account 岳麓书院 (the academy's own account).
- Book within the four-day window that includes today, according to the academy's wording. Check which dates are available in the account. One order can cover up to 10 people.
- Foreign visitors book with their passport. The academy says foreign visitors can use a foreign permanent resident ID card or passport for booking.
- At the gate: bring the original document you used when booking. The academy says visitors without a Chinese ID card go through the manual lane, where staff check the document. If it does not match the booking, you cannot enter.
- Special cases: you can buy at the manual ticket window with a valid ID.
- Plan to reserve. The academy's online ticketing page says unreserved visitors are not admitted, while its visitor-notice page lists a reservation exemption for older visitors using a physical Chinese ID card. Passport holders should not assume that exemption applies to them.
Do not buy from resellers. The academy says it has not authorised any company or organisation to sell tickets on its behalf.
Refunds: if you have not collected or scanned the ticket, you can request a refund until 23:00 on the visit day.
Guided tours: after entering, go to the guide service desk at the right gate (右门讲解服务处) and book on site. The enquiry phone is 0731-88823764. We found no price or language information for the guide service.
Opening hours: two official pages, two wordings
The academy's own website describes the seasons in two different ways, so here are both.
| Page | Warm season | Cool season |
|---|---|---|
| "Online ticketing" page (text) | May–October: 7:50–17:30. Ticket sales stop 17:30, last entry 17:40, closes 18:00 | November–April: 7:50–17:00. Ticket sales stop 17:00, last entry 17:10, closes 17:30 |
| "Opening hours" page (image) | May Day holiday to mid-to-late October: same times as above (7:50–17:30) | Mid-to-late October to 30 April: same times as above (7:50–17:00) |
The times are the same. The disagreement is when the switch happens: the text page says 1 November, and the image page says mid-to-late October. By our calculation, the two schedules differ by 30 minutes at closing time: 18:00 versus 17:30. If you are going in the second half of October, check the 岳麓书院 account for that day's closing time. The academy usually closes for three days at Spring Festival (see its announcement), and hours can change with the season and with events.
The mountain is free, but the academy at its foot is a separate ¥40 ticket
It is easy to book Yuelu Mountain in one WeChat account and walk down to the academy expecting to get in. You cannot. The academy has its own price, its own account and its own four-day booking window (including today). Its online ticketing page says unreserved visitors are not admitted. A separate visitor-notice page lists a reservation exemption for older visitors with a physical Chinese ID card, and passport holders should not assume it applies to them. Book it separately, and use your passport.
🏮 Taiping Street, Pozi Street and Wuyi Square: the old-town food district
This is Changsha's central shopping and food district. We found no official page with opening hours or admission details for these streets, so we give none, and we do not call them free. What the official English pages from the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism say:
- Taiping Street (太平街) "stretches from West Jiefang Road to Wuyi Avenue" (April 2023 piece). Jia Yi's Former Residence is on the street. At the south gate, the same piece mentions a construction site for the ruins of a Southern Song courtyard (as of 2023).
- Street food: the piece describes "an assortment of street food along both sides with long lines". That is the Taiping Street experience: you queue for snacks.
- Pozi Street (坡子街) in Tianxin District was named one of ten streets in China's "top ten food tourism cities" selection, which also included Changsha (September 2023 piece).
- Wuyi Square business district (五一广场商圈): a September 2022 piece calls it the most prosperous business district in Changsha and a national "Internet-famous" one. It includes West Jiefang Road, Taiping Old Street, Pozi Street and the Huangxing South Road pedestrian street. It covers the area within a 30-minute walk of the Wuyi Avenue and Huangxing Road intersection, with more than 20 commercial streets.
- Metro: Wuyi Square station (五一广场站) is on Lines 1 and 2. The 2022 piece also mentions Huangxing Square station (Line 1).
The government pieces are from 2022 and 2023, so use them for the layout of the area, not for any current price or opening time.
🍲 What to Eat in Changsha: stinky tofu, Hunan spice and the snack streets
Hunan food is spicy, and Changsha is the provincial capital of it. The city was selected as one of China's "top ten food tourism cities", and Pozi Street as one of ten streets (provincial English piece, 2023). Here is what to order and where the official sources point you.
The dishes (names are public knowledge; we give no prices)
- Stinky tofu (臭豆腐, chòu dòufu): fermented tofu, deep-fried and served hot with chili sauce. It is the snack Changsha is best known for.
- Spicy crayfish (口味虾, kǒuwèi xiā): crayfish cooked in a heavily spiced sauce, eaten with your hands.
- Chopped-chili fish head (剁椒鱼头, duò jiāo yú tóu): a fish head under a blanket of salted red chili, steamed.
- Mao-style braised pork (毛氏红烧肉): pork belly braised in a dark, sweet-savoury sauce.
- Sugar-oil rice cakes (糖油粑粑, táng yóu bā bā): fried glutinous rice cakes coated in sugar, a street snack.
The places the official English pages name
We use only the shop names that the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism English piece (September 2023) names. We did not check whether the translated names match Chinese signage, and we found no official per-person prices.
- Fire God Palace (火宫殿): an old brand on Pozi Street with more than 400 years of food culture and more than 100 kinds of local snacks. The piece names stinky tofu as its representative dish. If you try one stinky tofu in Changsha, this is the place the official source points you to.
- Yang Yuxing: another old brand (老字号) on Pozi Street, named in the same piece.
- Wenheyou and Super Wenheyou (超级文和友): Wenheyou is listed in the piece as an Internet-famous local brand. The April 2023 Taiping Street piece ends its food route at Super Wenheyou: Wuyi Road, then West Jiefang Road, then Taiping Street, then Super Wenheyou.
- Modern China Tea Shop: another Internet-famous local brand, named as written in the official English piece. We could not confirm which tea chain the translation refers to, so we do not name it.
How to eat well without a plan
- Snack stalls first. Taiping Street has street food on both sides, with long lines. Join the longest line that is moving.
- Prices. We found no official per-person prices, so we give no numbers. Ask before you order.
- Ask for less spice. Say "wēi là" (微辣, mild) or "bú yào là" (不要辣, no chili). Hunan cooks use a lot of chili.
- Payment: carry a little cash for stalls as a backup to your phone. See How to Pay.
🌃 Changsha Nightlife: the "24-hour city" plan and where the lights are
Changsha says it wants to be a "24-hour city" and to build night-consumption districts: that is how the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism's English piece puts it (September 2023). Here is what the official pages actually describe.
- Wuyi Square business district is the centre of it. West Jiefang Road (解放西路) is one of the streets inside the district, with Taiping Old Street, Pozi Street and the Huangxing South Road pedestrian street (2022 piece).
- Non-super Wenheyou (非超级文和友) is a night market that the 2022 piece says opened in 2022 on Xiahe Street (Xiangjiang Middle Road). The piece is from September 2022, so we do not know its current hours or whether it still runs in the same form.
- A word on "bar street". We found no official source that calls West Jiefang Road a bar street. We only describe it as a street in the business district. We also do not name bars or quote drink prices.
Plan your ride home (metro timetable, checked 4 October 2026)
The metro operator's timetable page is not dated, so treat it as current for the day we read it. The March 2025 Hunan provincial government English page gives a general 6:30–23:00 operating window. For your journey, we recommend checking the station-specific times on the operator's timetable. At Wuyi Square station, the timetable shows:
| Line and direction | First train | Last train |
|---|---|---|
| Line 2, toward Guangda | 6:33 | 23:21 |
| Line 2, toward Meixihu West | 6:30 | 23:26 |
| Line 1, toward Jinpenqiu | 6:33 | 23:28 |
| Line 1, toward Shangshuangtang | 6:34 | 23:27 |
Late taxis and ride-hailing: we found no official page on late-night taxi or ride-hailing, so we give no fares or hours. The safest plan is to be on your way before the last train. Holiday extensions to the metro hours are under Metro Guide.
A city with an official plan to stay awake all night, and last trains at Wuyi Square between 23:21 and 23:28
Changsha's government says it wants to be a "24-hour city", with night-consumption districts and, in 2022, a night market (Non-super Wenheyou) announced in an official English piece. The part to remember for your plans is the practical one: the last trains at Wuyi Square leave between 23:21 and 23:28. The 2026 holiday notice schedules midnight operation on 24 September, 30 September, 1 October and 7 October, except for Line 3's Hongqiao–Xiangtan North section, which runs until 23:00. Check the last train before you settle in for the evening.

Go Further
Changsha is a good base for two very different trips. One is Shaoshan, the village where Mao Zedong grew up. The other is Zhangjiajie, the sandstone-pillar landscape that more or less sells China to the world. Both are in Hunan, and that matters for your visa as well as your schedule (see the visa section). We found no official page for how to get from Changsha to either place. So for every train in this part, the answer is the same: search the 12306 English website for your date, and read the times and fares there. If you would rather not do it yourself, we can arrange a private car with driver or a guide for either trip.
🚩 Shaoshan Day Trip from Changsha: Mao Zedong's Former Residence
Bottom line: Shaoshan is easy to see from the outside and harder to get inside on a busy day. The outside of Mao Zedong's former residence needs no reservation. The inside does, and you queue once you are in.
What you can and cannot walk up to (rules from the memorial's reservation notice of 10 December 2025, marked "trial"):
- Former residence, outside: no reservation needed.
- Former residence, inside: reservation needed, plus a queue.
- Residence hours: every day 8:00 to 16:00. Check-in verification runs 8:00 to 15:50. The daily cap is 16,000 visitors.
- Biography exhibition area: Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 16:00. Closed Mondays for maintenance. If a Monday is a national holiday, the closure moves.
- Themed exhibition area: every day 9:00 to 16:00.
How to reserve (the only official channel)
- Open WeChat and search for the official account 韶山毛泽东同志纪念馆 (Shaoshan Mao Zedong Memorial). Tap 官方订票 (official booking).
- Pick your date. You can book at most 6 days ahead, not counting today.
- Fill in the real-name details. The reservation is free.
- Know the clock. Same-day booking stops at 15:30. The newest day opens at 17:00 each evening. If you want a specific day, be ready at 17:00 exactly six days before.
- Do not pay anyone else for it. The memorial says it has not authorized any other website or third-party platform to take reservations.
The catch: passports. At the gate, the notice lists two ways to check in. One is the original ID card. The notice names the foreigner's permanent residence ID and the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residence permit as accepted versions of that. The other is a paper reservation slip issued at a staffed service window. The notice does not mention passports. We found no official page that says a visitor with only a passport can or cannot check in. So go to the staffed service window and ask before you queue. We can help you plan the visit and tell you how to book.
Spring and autumn are tighter. In March to June and September to December, the memorial runs red-tourism study programs ("我的韶山行"). During those months, 09:00–11:00 in the biography and themed exhibition areas is reserved for study programs, alongside additional dedicated study hours listed in the notice. Those study slots are not open for tourists to book. The notice does not give the remaining tourist quota. It also says the venues stay open to tourist reservations as usual on national holidays, on relevant Mao Zedong commemorative dates and when study sessions are cancelled. Book early in those months.
If the reservation is full. In a notice posted on 1 May 2026, the memorial said bookings for 2 to 4 May were close to the limit. Its advice for people without a slot was to visit free sites nearby: the South Bank Private School (南岸私塾), the Mao Clan Ancestral Hall (毛氏宗祠), the Mao Zedong Library (毛泽东图书馆) and Mao Zedong Square (毛泽东广场). That was a holiday-week notice, not a standing rule. Still, it is a useful plan B.
Getting there. No official source, so: check the 12306 English website, or ask us for a private car with driver. Leave the whole day open. We are not giving a journey time because we cannot source one.
Honest advice: go on a day the biography area is open (not Monday), book the moment the window opens, and keep the free sites as your fallback. If the passport question matters to you, ask at the service window first thing.
🏔️ Changsha to Zhangjiajie: Tickets and How to Plan It
For the full guide, go to our Zhangjiajie page. This section covers only the Changsha side of the trip.
Train. We have no official source for station names, train numbers, fares or journey time. Search Changsha to Zhangjiajie on the 12306 English website and read the result there.
The park ticket. Prices below are for the Wulingyuan core scenic area (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park), from the park's own ticket page. The page is not dated. It cites an entrance-ticket rule effective 1 January 2025 and an eco-bus pricing rule effective 1 January 2026. Follow the latest price posted at the ticket window.
| Ticket | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance + park eco-bus combo | ¥236 | Gate entry and the scenic-area eco-bus. Valid for 4 consecutive days. |
| Entrance only | ¥165 | Does not include the eco-bus, cable cars or elevator. Valid for 4 consecutive days. |
- An optional insurance of ¥3 is listed as voluntary.
- One entrance ticket works at five ticket stations: East Gate (Wujiayu), South Gate (Forest Park), West Gate (Yangjiajie), North Gate (Tianzishan) and Central Gate (Zimugang).
- The official e-commerce platform is the mini-program 张家界一机游 ("Zhangjiajie One-Phone Tour"). It sells tickets, cable cars, elevators and lodging.
- For booking more than 10 days ahead, the page points you to the scenic-area ticket management office at 0744-5718833.
- The page does not say how a foreign passport is used to buy or enter. We found no official page on that.
Why four days? A ticket valid for four days and five gates is the park telling you it is not a quick stop. If you only have a day, you will see a slice. We can help you plan a trip that fits, and we can arrange the train tickets, a guide or a private car with driver.
Land in Changsha, hike Zhangjiajie, all inside one visa-free transit
Hunan counts as one allowed region for the 240-hour visa-free transit. Changsha Huanghua Airport and Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport are both on the port list, and the permitted stay area is the whole province. So if you qualify for the 240-hour rule, an arrival in Changsha and a few days in Zhangjiajie both sit inside it. You still need to meet the other conditions, such as an onward ticket to a third country or region. All the details are on the 240-hour transit areas page.
🚄 Other Cities by High-Speed Rail
If you are building a longer route, consider Wuhan, Guilin or Guangzhou as your next stop. Check the 12306 English website for available trains, times and fares on your date.
One warning for 240-hour transit users. If a leg takes you into another province, both provinces must be inside the permitted stay area. Check the list before you book: 240-hour transit areas.
🛏️ Where to Stay in Changsha: Best Areas for First-Timers
Short answer: stay near Wuyi Square unless you have a reason not to. We have no hotel names or rates to give you, and no official source says "stay here". What follows is how the city's metro and sights are laid out, so you can trade off convenience against crowds.
| Area | Best for | What the official sources say | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wuyi Square (五一广场) business district | First-timers; food and street walking | Metro Lines 1 and 2 meet at Wuyi Square station. A 2022 provincial tourism-department page calls the district the most prosperous in the city (what it includes is under Taiping Street). | The busiest part of town. The same page notes big crowds at the Huangxing Square station (Line 1) exit at night. |
| Near Changsha South Railway Station (长沙火车南站) | Early trains; one-night stops; Zhangjiajie or Shaoshan the next morning | On Metro Line 2 and Line 4. A January 2024 Spring Festival travel notice described a high-speed-rail transfer channel without a second security check at Changsha South's Line 2 station, and a separate intercity-rail transfer channel at Jintai Square station (锦泰广场站). Confirm the current arrangements at the station. The airport maglev links this high-speed station with the airport (see Airport to City Center). | You will take the metro to reach the sights. Last trains differ by direction; the Line 2 times are in the maglev notes under Airport to City Center. |
| Yuelu Mountain and Hunan University side (岳麓山、湖南大学) | Mornings on Yuelu Mountain and at Yuelu Academy | The 2025 Yuelu Mountain notice names Line 2 Yingwanzhen station for the east gate, and Line 4 Hunan University station for the south gate. Yuelu Academy sits at the foot of the mountain and is run by Hunan University. | Choose this area if mornings at Yuelu Mountain and the academy matter more to you than staying near the Wuyi Square food streets. The last Line 4 trains are in the Yuelu Mountain section. |
Check which station your train leaves from. A 2014 city government page lists both Changsha South and Changsha Railway Station on Line 2. Your 12306 booking tells you which one you need.
Our pick: Wuyi Square for a first trip. You trade some noise for being in the middle of the food, the old streets and the metro crossing. Choose the railway station side only if you have a train at dawn. Hotels register foreign guests; see accommodation registration.
🗺️ Changsha Itinerary: 2 and 3 Days
These plans use only opening hours and metro times we could source, and they point back to the sections that hold them. We give no travel times between places because we have no official figures. Read each leg off your map app.
Book first. Most visitors should make real-name reservations for the museum, Yuelu Academy and Yuelu Mountain in advance (steps are in Part 3, which also explains the listed exemptions). Shaoshan opens its newest day at 17:00, six days ahead. Everything below assumes your slots are booked.
2 days: the essential Changsha
Day 1: Hunan Museum, then the old streets
- Before you go: reserve the museum (window, release time and passport rules are under Hunan Museum). The museum is normally closed on Mondays and holiday notices can change its hours, so use a day it is open.
- Morning: the Hunan Museum. Take Metro Line 6 to "Lieshi Park South (Hunan Provincial Museum)". The Mawangdui Han tomb exhibition is one of the free permanent exhibitions. The museum has free luggage storage.
- Late afternoon and evening: go to the Wuyi Square district. Taiping Street runs from West Jiefang Road to Wuyi Avenue, with Jia Yi's former residence on it. A 2023 provincial page says both sides are lined with snack stalls and "long lines". Pozi Street is in the same district. We found no official opening hours for either street. Food picks are under What to Eat.
Day 2: Yuelu Academy, Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle
- Morning: Yuelu Academy (reserve on the WeChat account 岳麓书院). The seasonal opening hours and the date they switch are in the academy hours table; in the second half of October, check the account for that day's closing time.
- Late morning: Yuelu Mountain, which needs a free reservation. From the Hunan University side, take Line 4 to Hunan University station for the south gate. For the east gate, take Line 2 to Yingwanzhen. Opening hours and the cable car are under Yuelu Mountain; the cable car may stop in rain.
- Afternoon: Orange Isle, with the same free reservation system as Yuelu Mountain. Sightseeing shuttles can be bought in advance on the 龙骧橘子洲 mini-program or on site.
- Evening: back to the Wuyi Square area for dinner. Check your last metro before you go (see the ride-home table).
3 days: add Shaoshan
Days 1 and 2: as above
Run the 2-day plan unchanged.
Day 3: Shaoshan, Mao Zedong's former residence
- Six days before: reserve on WeChat when the newest day opens (see Shaoshan).
- Pick the right day. Not Monday, if you want the biography area (closed Mondays). Remember that in March to June and September to December, 09:00–11:00 in the biography and themed exhibition areas is reserved for study programs that tourists cannot book (national holidays are an exception; see Shaoshan).
- Morning: train or private car. We have no sourced times, so check the 12306 English website or ask us for a car with driver.
- Before 15:50: be at the residence for check-in verification. The residence closes at 16:00.
- Document check: bring the ID you will show. The notice names ID cards, foreigner permanent residence IDs and paper slips from the staffed window. Passports are not mentioned. Ask at the window.
- If your slot is full: walk the free sites: South Bank Private School, Mao Clan Ancestral Hall, Mao Zedong Library and Mao Zedong Square.
Prefer Zhangjiajie for day 3? Treat that as its own trip: the park ticket is valid for four days. See the Zhangjiajie section and our Zhangjiajie page.
Want a Changsha plan built around your dates? We can book flights, hotels and train tickets, and arrange guides and a private car with driver. For tickets and reservations, we help you plan them and tell you how to book.

Know Before You Go
🧠 Etiquette, traps & health — the fine print
Money is under How to Pay, prices are in the budget table, and weather is under Best Time. This part keeps only what is left.
🤝 Etiquette and everyday culture (general advice)
The points below are general advice, not official rules.
- Tipping is not expected in restaurants, taxis and hotels. Say thanks and keep your change.
- Save Chinese names. Screenshot the Chinese name of every place you plan to visit. Examples: 湖南省博物馆 (Hunan Museum), 岳麓书院 (Yuelu Academy), 韶山毛泽东同志纪念馆 (Shaoshan Mao Zedong Memorial). Show your phone to a driver or staff member.
- Carry your passport. The museum and Yuelu Academy check the original document you booked with; for Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle, confirm the entry procedure in the official account. Hotels register guests too. See accommodation registration.
- Tap water: use bottled or boiled water rather than drinking it straight from the tap.
- Hunan food is spicy. Ask for less chili if you need to (see What to Eat).
🎟️ Tickets, IDs and opening hours: the traps
- Each sight has its own booking channel. Hunan Museum (WeChat service account or Alipay mini-program), Yuelu Academy, Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle, and Shaoshan each use their own. Steps for the first three are in Part 3. Shaoshan is in Part 4.
- Bring the document you booked with.
- Mondays. The museum is normally closed. Shaoshan's biography area is closed too. If Monday is a national holiday, the closure moves.
- No resellers. Yuelu Academy and Shaoshan both say they have not authorized anyone to resell or book for them.
- Seasons and holidays change hours. Yuelu Academy has two seasonal schedules (see its hours table) and usually closes for three days at Spring Festival. Check the museum's notices before a long holiday.
🩺 Health and safety
- Emergency numbers (general advice): police 110, ambulance 120, fire 119.
- Water. Bottled or boiled only.
- Medicine. Show your phone with the Chinese name of your medicine at a pharmacy (药店).
- Insurance. Travel insurance with medical cover is worth having.
- Heat and rain. In summer, carry water on the hill walks. The Yuelu cable car can stop in rain.
- Crime figures. We found no official safety statistics for Changsha, so we do not quote any or rank the city. Use the common sense you would use in any big city, and keep your hotel name in Chinese on your phone.
❓ FAQ — straight answers to what everyone actually asks
Do I need a visa to visit Changsha?
Check your passport first. Changsha Huanghua Airport (CSX) is a 240-hour visa-free transit port, and the permitted area for Hunan is the whole province, so Changsha, Zhangjiajie and Shaoshan are all inside it. If your country is on the 30-day visa-free list, the notices we read do not limit that route to a list of provinces. US citizens are not on the 30-day list but can use the 240-hour transit, which needs an onward ticket from China to a third country or region. If anything is unclear, call the 12367 immigration hotline before you book. (Full breakdown: Part 1; lists: 240-hour transit areas and 30-day visa-free countries.)
How do I book the Hunan Museum as a foreigner?
The museum says foreign visitors can book and check in with a passport or a foreign permanent resident ID card. Booking is real-name and by time slot, up to 5 days ahead (not counting today), and the newest day's tickets are released at 20:00. Use the museum website, the official WeChat service account or the official Alipay mini-program; the homepage and the Visit page list the channels slightly differently. Bring the original document you booked with. The main exhibitions are free. (Steps: Part 3.)
Is Yuelu Mountain free, and do I need to book?
Entry to Yuelu Mountain and Orange Isle is free, but you must reserve first. The only official channel is the WeChat official account named 岳麓山 橘子洲旅游区, and the scenic area says bookings on other platforms are not valid. The detailed rules we found are from a September 2025 notice (booking up to 3 days ahead, by time slot). We found no 2026 version, so check the account before you go. (Details: Part 3.)
Is Yuelu Academy included in the free Yuelu Mountain entry?
No. Yuelu Academy at the foot of the mountain has its own ticket (¥40 full price, ¥20 half price), its own WeChat account (岳麓书院) and its own booking, which covers a four-day window including today, according to the academy's wording. Foreign visitors book with a passport. Plan to reserve separately: the academy's online ticketing page says unreserved visitors are not admitted, while its visitor-notice page lists a reservation exemption for older visitors using a physical Chinese ID card. Passport holders should not assume that exemption applies to them. (Details and hours: Part 3.)
How do I get from Changsha airport to the city?
Metro Line 6 runs from Huanghua Airport T1T2 station (first train 6:30, last 23:00 from the airport) and passes the Hunan Museum station. The Maglev Express runs to Changsha South Railway Station, where you change to Metro Line 2 or 4; the fare we have is ¥20, from a January 2024 city notice. After the last train, use a taxi or ride-hailing app; we found no official page on taxi fares. (Full table: Part 2.)
Can I tap a foreign bank card on the Changsha metro?
We found no official statement on this. The Hunan government English page lists Alipay, WeChat and local mini-programs and apps, plus single-journey tickets from vending machines or ticket counters. Use Alipay or buy a single-journey ticket at the machine. (Details: Metro Guide.)
Can I pay with cash in Changsha?
Most people pay by phone, but cash is still legal tender: since 1 February 2026, staffed businesses must accept it. See Is cash accepted in China? Carry a little cash for snack stalls and as a backup to your phone.
Can I visit Shaoshan without booking, and does my passport work?
Partly. The outside of Mao Zedong's former residence needs no reservation; the inside does, plus a queue. The free reservation is by WeChat only, through the account 韶山毛泽东同志纪念馆, up to 6 days ahead (not counting today). The December 2025 notice lists an original ID card (including the foreigner permanent residence ID) or a paper slip from a staffed service window, and it does not mention passports. Ask at the service window. (Details: Part 4.)
How do I get from Changsha to Zhangjiajie, and what do tickets cost?
Search Changsha to Zhangjiajie on the 12306 English website; we found no official source for train numbers, fares or times. For the Wulingyuan core area the park's ticket page lists ¥236 for entrance plus eco-bus and ¥165 for entrance only, both valid for 4 consecutive days. The page is undated and says the price posted at the ticket window is final. See our Zhangjiajie page for the destination.
When is the best time to visit Changsha?
Hunan's weather bureau says October is usually clear and crisp, but a cold front can drop temperatures fast, as in October 2021. Mid-June to early July is plum-rain season, and a hot midsummer follows until late August. We found no official monthly climate figures for Changsha. (Details: Part 1.)
Where should I stay in Changsha?
Near Wuyi Square for first-timers: it has the food streets and the metro crossing of Lines 1 and 2. Near Changsha South Railway Station if you have an early train. On the Yuelu Mountain and Hunan University side for mornings at the mountain and the academy. No official source says where to stay; this is our read of the layout. (Table: Part 4.)
