Changsha to Zhangjiajie train: how long it takes and which is fastest
Take a G or C train from Changsha station to Zhangjiajie West. It takes about two hours, and a second-class seat costs ¥166, or ¥129 to ¥160 on trains with a discount label. Those numbers come from the 12306 English-site search run on 6 October 2026 for travel on 14 October 2026. Train lists and fares change with the travel date, so search your own date.
That search returned 45 lines. Three (G2426, G2436 and G3649) show no times and no fares, only the note "Ticketing service is temporarily closed due to train timetable adjustment." That leaves 42 real trains: 18 G, 20 C, 2 Z and 2 K.
The fastest is G2446, leaving Changsha at 14:06 and reaching Zhangjiajie West at 15:51 (1h45m). Five more take 1h53m: G2448 07:04 to 08:57, G2450 07:57 to 09:50, G2432 10:00 to 11:53, G3764 10:10 to 12:03 and C7782 11:00 to 12:53.
Changsha station or Changsha South? Zhangjiajie West or Zhangjiajie station?
The result uses short spellings. "Changsha" is Changsha station (长沙站). "Changshanan" is Changsha South station (长沙南站). "Zhangjiajiexi" is Zhangjiajie West station (张家界西站). "Zhangjiajie" is Zhangjiajie station (张家界站).
In the 14 October 2026 result the choice at the Changsha end matters. Nine G trains leave from Changsha South. They take 2h52m to 3h25m, about an hour longer than the Changsha station trains, and cost about double. We'd choose a Changsha station train unless a Changsha South time suits you better. Read the departure station on the result line before you pay.
At the Zhangjiajie end, every G, C and Z train in that result arrives at Zhangjiajie West. Only the two K trains go to Zhangjiajie station: K9268 (04:35 to 10:16, 5h41m) and K1376 (06:12 to 11:58, 5h46m). The Hunan government page "Hunan Railway Stations" (3 July 2026) gives these addresses:
- Changsha: No. 406, Chezhan Middle Road, Furong District.
- Changsha South: Huahou Road, Lituo Neighborhood, Yuhua District.
- Zhangjiajie West: west side of Wulingshan Avenue, Shati Township, north Yongding District.
- Zhangjiajie: near Guanli Road, Yongding District.
That page gives no distances, so it doesn't say which station is closer to the centre.
How much is the Changsha to Zhangjiajie train ticket?
These are the fares in the 14 October 2026 result. Fares move with the date: 34 of the 42 trains carry an "x% off" label on at least one seat type, from 3% to 22% off. A labelled fare is a discounted fare, so the full fare is higher.
| Route | Time | Second class | First class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changsha station to Zhangjiajie West (29 G and C trains) | 1h45m to 2h23m | ¥166 (4); marked ¥129 to ¥160 (25) | ¥268 (4); marked ¥207 to ¥258 (25) |
| Changsha South to Zhangjiajie West (9 G trains) | 2h52m to 3h25m | marked ¥292 to ¥301 (9) | marked ¥465 to ¥480 (9) |
First figure: trains without a label; "marked": trains with an "x% off" label, number in brackets. Some Changsha station trains also sell VIP seats (¥300 without a label, ¥233 to ¥289 marked) or business-class seats (¥546 without, ¥476 to ¥495 marked). The page also lists "standing ticket" fares at the second-class or hard-seat price. We wouldn't plan around them.
Sleeper and slow trains
- Z298 leaves Changsha at 02:10 and reaches Zhangjiajie West at 05:20 (3h10m), so it leaves in the middle of the night and arrives before dawn. Hard sleeper is ¥96.5 upper and ¥104.5 lower, soft sleeper ¥146.5 upper and ¥152.5 lower, hard seat ¥50.5.
- Z8002 leaves at 17:09 and reaches Zhangjiajie West at 20:37 (3h28m). It sells hard seat only, at ¥68.5.
- K9268 and K1376 take over five and a half hours and arrive at Zhangjiajie station. Hard seat is ¥83.5 on K9268 and ¥54.5 on K1376.
The result page warns: "The sleeper ticket prices shown on the page are all for upper berth. The actual prices vary among different berths."
How to buy the ticket on 12306 with a foreign passport
Use the 12306 English website or its app. The 12306 FAQ says it is the official site of the China Railway Customer Service Center and that the railway department will not handle ticketing problems that occurred on other websites.
- Register. The register page says "At present, only foreign passports are accepted for registration." The form asks for nationality, name, passport number, passport expiry date, date of birth, gender, username, password and email address. It has no phone-number field.
- Verify your identity. A Ministry of Commerce guide, published on the Hunan government site on 8 June 2026, says foreign travellers must verify before buying. You can enter your name, nationality and ID number for an automatic check, upload a photo of the passport information page for a manual check, or show a valid passport at a station ticket counter. The 12306 verification notice (in Chinese) says accounts marked "待核验" (pending) or "未通过" (not passed) cannot buy and must verify at a station ticket window, though foreign passport holders can also verify by uploading a passport photo on 12306.
- Search and pick a train. Check the departure and arrival station on each line.
- Pay. The same guide says online payment works with "Chinese or foreign bank cards and mobile payment apps". At a station ticket office it lists Chinese or foreign bank cards, RMB cash or mobile payment apps, and says to "refer to station signage or consult the cashier".
The English site sells tickets from 5:00 to 1:00 the next day (5:00 to 23:30 on Tuesday), according to its FAQ. For refund and change fees, see 12306 refund and change fees.
Station machines
The Beijing government page of 26 December 2025 lists only the Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, not the passport, for foreigners at automatic ticket vending machines. With a passport, use 12306 or a station ticket counter.
How many days ahead can you buy?
The 12306 help centre says internet presale is currently 15 days, including the day you buy, sold at staggered times by region. Railway groups may adjust it temporarily, so watch station notices. The English site's own presale range on 6 October 2026 ran from 6 to 20 October 2026, which is also 15 days.
Boarding with a passport: is the itinerary sheet my ticket?
No. You can print or download an "itinerary sheet" after buying, but the FAQ says: "Neither 'itinerary sheet' nor reimbursement receipt can be used as tickets." The Chinese passenger transport rules, in force from 1 June 2026, say the same about the "行程信息提示".
Take the passport you used to buy. The FAQ says to "Take the valid ID document used for purchasing the ticket with you", and the rules treat a ticket, ID and person that do not match as no ticket (票、证、人不一致的,按无票处理).
The Ministry of Commerce guide says foreign travellers can enter and leave the station through automatic or manual ticket gates with the original ID used at purchase. It doesn't say whether a passport can be read at an automatic gate, so follow the signs and staff. The FAQ warns that ticket sales and checks stop before departure (see the station announcement for the time) and that queues can form at the ticket window, security check, ID verification counter and ticket gate. Arrive early.
Getting to Changsha station or Changsha South
The Hunan government page of 24 July 2024 says the 18.55-km Changsha Maglev Express links Changsha South station with Changsha Huanghua International Airport. It doesn't give the maglev fare, journey time or hours, and doesn't say which metro line serves either station. Follow the metro signs in the station. More on the city is in the Changsha travel guide.
From Zhangjiajie West station to the city and Wulingyuan
- City centre (2022): a Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism guide of 29 August 2022, written for a conference at Zhangjiajie People's Square, says to take Route 6 from the high-speed rail bus station to Puguang Chan Temple station, then walk 2 minutes: about 50 minutes in total. A taxi is about 18 minutes. It covers one destination and gives no fare.
- Wulingyuan: a Hunan Department of Transport page of 15 July 2025 describes the "city-scenic bus" (城景巴士). It quotes a visitor who scanned the "Xiangyuexing" (湘悦行) QR code at about 6:00 at Zhangjiajie West and says the bus goes "from the high-speed rail station directly to Wulingyuan"; those are the visitor's words, not a stated route. A page of 6 June 2025 says tickets are sold online through Xiangyuexing.
Neither Hunan Department of Transport page lists fares or a route timetable, or says whether Xiangyuexing has an English interface or accepts foreign cards or passports. Use the Xiangyuexing platform for current tickets.
The 15 July 2025 page also says the early bus of the whole city-scenic bus company was moved to 6:20 and its last bus to 19:30, adjustable with scenic-area crowds. Those are company-wide times, not the times of one route. Even so, they show the gap: in the 14 October 2026 result, Z298 arrives at 05:20, before 6:20, and C7946 arrives at 23:12, after 19:30. If you land outside those hours, we can arrange a private-car transfer, and we can book the train for you. See the Zhangjiajie travel guide for what to do once you arrive.
