Can foreigners buy Huangshan tickets with a passport?
The official place to book is the mini-program 黄山旅游官方平台 (Huangshan Tourism Official Platform), which opens in WeChat or Alipay. The Huangshan Scenic Area Management Committee (黄山风景区管理委员会) says in its 4 March 2026 notice not to book scenic-area tickets through unofficial channels.
On passports, one notice names overseas visitors. The Committee's 13 May 2026 notice for a three-day half-price activity (18-20 May 2026, now ended) says to book in the mini-program, then enter by swiping the ID card, with overseas visitors verified by passport and ticket-purchase information. That wording comes from an activity notice, not from a rules page for ordinary tickets.
The 4 March notice says the ID on the ticket must match the visitor, and does not mention passports. The platform's booking notes (an undated page) say tickets are checked by swiping the second-generation ID card, the Chinese resident ID. They mention a passport only for members of a foreign national photographers' association, excluding its subordinate organizations, who get free entry and free cableway rides with their own passport and original membership card.
Three things the notices don't say
- Whether the mini-program asks foreign visitors for a passport number.
- Whether foreign bank cards can pay in the mini-program.
- Whether the offline ticket windows sell same-day tickets. The notices mention the windows only to say they no longer handle multi-entry reservations.
For all three, ask the scenic area's hotline: 0559-2590999.
How to book Huangshan tickets: real-name, timed-slot, by entry direction
- Open 黄山旅游官方平台 in WeChat or Alipay and tap scenic-area tickets (景区门票), then Huangshan Scenic Area (黄山风景区).
- Choose your entry direction, ticket type, play date and visitor details.
- Pay. Your order then shows under "Orders" (订单).
The Committee calls the system "limited numbers, advance reservation, staggered peaks". Real-name means the ID details on the ticket must be identical to the visitor who enters. Timed-slot means you enter inside the window you booked; for the East Gate, a notice tells late arrivals to cancel and rebook another slot that day with tickets left. Direction-specific means you enter from the gate direction you booked.
The 4 March notice advises booking at least one day ahead, and at least three days ahead on public holidays. The 28 September 2026 National Day notice repeated three days for that holiday. If you stay in a hotel inside the scenic area, reserve the ticket first.
Entry tickets and cableway tickets are separate. For cableways, see Huangshan cable car tickets. For the area itself, see the Huangshan travel guide.
How much is a Huangshan ticket in 2026?
| Period | Full ticket | Half ticket |
|---|---|---|
| 20 Dec 2025 to 20 Jan 2026 (winter, ended) | ¥150 | ¥75 |
| 21 Jan 2026 to 19 Dec 2026 (regular and peak season) | ¥190 | ¥95 |
These come from the Huangshan government's price policy, reprinted on 19 December 2025. It runs to 19 December 2026 and gives no prices after that. It does not say who qualifies for the half ticket.
The platform's booking notes (undated) list half-price groups: minors over 6 up to and including 18, full-time students up to undergraduate level, people aged 60 to under 65, veterans, and families of serving soldiers. Free entry includes children 6 and under or 1.2 m and under with a guardian, and people 65 and over. These groups are defined by the resident ID card, household register, student card, military papers and similar documents. The page does not say whether a foreign passport or a foreign student card counts.
Is there a half-price ticket for foreigners in 2026?
A 24 March 2025 report on the Amazing Huangshan site (a municipal publicity channel run with China Daily) said Huangshan would offer half-price tickets throughout the year to foreign tourists at 14 scenic spots rated 4A or above, including Mount Huangshan. That is a 2025 policy; the Committee's March, May, June and September 2026 notices do not confirm a year-round discount for foreign tourists. Its 13 May 2026 notice announced a half-price offer for visitors worldwide on 18-20 May, which has ended.
Does one Huangshan ticket work for several days?
Yes. One ticket allows repeated entry for three days, counted from the day of your first successful check-in and including that day, with unlimited entries and exits.
- Reserve your first-day ticket and have it checked at a ticket office on day one. The booking notes name Yungu Temple (云谷寺), Ciguang Pavilion (慈光阁) and Songgu'an (松谷庵). A ticket reserved but never checked cannot start the multi-entry right.
- For each later day, reserve again in the mini-program after that first check; the 4 March notice says there is a daily quota. The price policy says to choose the entry direction (its page lists the South, North or West Gate), then the ticket type "多次进山门票", fill in the date and details, pay, and wait for back-end review.
- Offline windows no longer handle these reservations, so do it online.
That price page predates the East Gate and does not list it for multi-entry. The booking notes call the later-day ticket "黄山门票—免票"; use whichever name the mini-program shows.
Do I need a separate reservation for Tiandu Peak?
Yes. Tiandu Peak (天都峰) runs on real-name reservation, and the WeChat mini-program 黄山旅游官方平台 is its only online booking entry. The system is "online booking plus activation on entering the mountain" (线上预约+入山激活). The path is steep with limited capacity: "no reservation, no climb".
- Winter: from 1 December 2025 Tiandu Peak and the West Sea Grand Canyon (西海大峡谷) closed for winter maintenance, with the West Gate spots closed too. Tiandu Peak reopened on 7 April 2026. No notice for winter 2026-27 had appeared by 6 October 2026, so closing dates are not known.
- Other dates: the 4 March notice says opening dates are announced separately. On 1-7 October 2026 Tiandu Peak was open 6:30-15:00, exit only after 15:00. Lotus Peak (莲花峰) is closed for rotation rest.
- Weather: it closes temporarily in thunderstorms or strong wind. Without a reservation, the Committee suggests another date or sights such as Shixin Peak (始信峰).
How to get in through the new East Gate
The East Gate and Donghai Cableway opened on 11 June 2026 at 9:00. The 9 June notice says to book the scenic-area ticket and cableway ticket online on the platform. An 11 June visitor guide on the Amazing Huangshan site says they must be booked together.
- Getting there: the guide gives about 30 minutes by shuttle from Huangshanxi Railway Station to the East Gate Tourist Center, and about one hour from Huangshanbei Railway Station. Drivers can park at Tanjiaqiao Passenger Transport Center and take a shuttle.
- No trail: no hiking trail links the East Gate to the mountain. The Donghai Cableway (6,638 m, about 30 minutes per trip) is the only way in and out in that area, so plan your exit first.
- Hours: 11 June to 30 November, Monday to Friday 7:00-17:10, Saturday, Sunday and short holidays 6:30-17:40; 1-31 December, 8:00-16:40.
Huangshan opening hours
These are the regular hours in the 4 March 2026 notice, in force from 5 March 2026. The Yungu, Yuping and Taiping cableways run the same hours as the scenic area.
| Period | Scenic area and cableways |
|---|---|
| 5 Mar to 30 Nov, Mon-Fri | 7:00-17:10 |
| 5 Mar to 30 Nov, Sat, Sun and short holidays | 6:30-17:40 |
| 1 Dec to 4 Mar, every day | 8:00-16:40 |
Hiking-entry ticket checkpoints close at 15:00, then the trail gates are exit only. May Day, National Day and Spring Festival hours are announced separately, and hours can change for events or heavy bookings. As a holiday example, on 1-7 October 2026 the scenic area and cableways ran 6:00-17:40 on 2-6 October and 6:30-17:40 on 1 and 7 October.
Huangshan tickets sold out, closed or refunded?
The 4 March notice says that when reservations reach the daily maximum, the platform's prompt says so and a waitlist starts. Returned tickets go to waitlist orders in the order placed, and an unmatched waitlist payment goes back by the original route. The notice also says not to believe that a waitlist or paying extra will surely get you in.
The booking notes say an unused entry ticket can be returned within 7 days after the play date, not after. Return it under "Orders" in the mini-program, or by phone on 0559-2590999. The notes do not mention a fee.
When the scenic area itself closed, ticket holders were told to cancel or rebook. On 9 August 2026 a typhoon closed the whole scenic area, with all hiking entrances and cableways. People with tickets for the closure days were told to cancel through the original channel or rebook another date. Cableways may also stop in thunderstorms, strong wind, snow or ice.
