Do I need to book the Chongqing Three Gorges Museum in 2026?
No. The Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum (重庆中国三峡博物馆) published a notice on cancelling reservations dated 30 September 2025. From 1 October, the main museum, its Three Gorges Cultural Relics Science and Technology Protection Base, the Chongqing Song Qingling Memorial and the Chongqing White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum no longer need a reservation. Visitors enter with a valid ID (凭有效身份证件).
The main museum's permanent exhibitions are free, according to the museum's visitor notice. The Song Qingling Memorial and the White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum are the exception: the notice says both require a purchased ticket.
Many English travel sites still describe the old reservation system. The 2025 notice replaces it, so you don't need to chase a booking link for the main museum.
Foreign passports: not stated
The notice says only ‘valid ID’. It does not mention passports, foreigners or groups, and the museum's English pages (listed 2015-07-22) say nothing about reservations or the 2025 change. We'd carry your original passport as the ID a foreign visitor has. Whether the entrance staff accept it is not written on these pages, so ask at the door if you are unsure.
What ID do I bring, and what about crowds?
Bring a valid ID. That is all the notice asks for. The notice also says the museum will publish crowd warnings in real time and steer people to off-peak visits. It asks you to follow the museum's WeChat official account and its Weibo account for these messages, and to follow the staff on site. For any question, it says to ask the on-site staff.
The museum's English page (listed 2015-07-22) mentions a limit of 5,000 visitors per day under the old free-admission rules. The 2025 notice does not give any cap. Treat the 2015 figure as old.
The museum's enquiry line is 023-63679066 or 023-63679067, printed in the page footer as closed on Mondays. The address is 236 Renmin Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing (重庆市渝中区人民路236号).
Chongqing Three Gorges Museum opening hours and last entry
The museum's own visitor notice says:
- Hours: 9:00-17:00.
- Last entry: no entry after 16:00. Clearing starts at 16:45 and the museum closes at 17:00.
- Closing day: Mondays, except national statutory holidays.
That page is dated 2018-08-27. The museum's English pages (both listed 2015-07-22) agree: 9:00-17:00, no admission later than 16:00, and not open on Monday (excluding legal holidays). Neither page gives separate holiday hours or lists which days count as holidays. Because both pages are old, the notice posted at the door takes priority over them.
Is the Chongqing Three Gorges Museum free?
The permanent exhibitions are free. The visitor notice says the museum's basic exhibitions are open to the public free of charge. The English page lists the free scope as including Magnificent Three Gorges, Ancient Ba-Yu, Chongqing: Journey of the City and several other halls, plus the Grand Three Gorges circular-screen movie. That list is from 2015, so the halls on display today may differ.
Special exhibitions: the English ‘Notes for free opening’ says that whether thematic and special exhibitions are free or not, you should see the exhibit preview for details. Neither the English page nor the Chinese visitor notice gives a price for them, so look at the preview for the exhibition you want.
Song Qingling Memorial and White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum
Two of the museum's branches need a purchased ticket: the Chongqing Song Qingling Memorial (重庆宋庆龄纪念馆) and the Chongqing White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum (重庆白鹤梁水下博物馆). The notice says only that. It gives no price, no booking method and no opening hours for them, so this page can't either.
Guided tours and audio guides at the Chongqing Three Gorges Museum
The visitor notice says the museum offers multi-method, multi-language, multi-hall guide service. It does not say which languages, so it does not tell you whether English is covered.
The museum's first recommendation is the free option. Connect to the museum's free Wi-Fi, scan the QR code and follow the museum's WeChat official account. That gives you a free voice guide and a free audiovisual guide covering the ten permanent exhibitions and key special exhibitions. If you don't use WeChat, this route is harder. The museum's English page (listed 2015-07-22) also lists free explanation by volunteers among its services, but gives no times or languages for it, so ask at the entrance.
The convenience-services page (dated 2014-10-24) also lists ‘voice guide rental’ as a service. It gives no price, so we can't say what it costs or whether it is still offered.
Staff guide fees
The museum's fee notice (dated 2023-04-25, effective 29 April 2023) sets these prices for the main museum's full-time guides:
| Tour | Price |
|---|---|
| 60 minutes, 2 halls, up to 30 people | 300 yuan |
| 90 minutes, 3 halls, up to 30 people | 450 yuan |
| Each extra person over 30 (maximum 35 per session) | plus 20 yuan |
| Booking a guide in advance | plus 100 yuan customised-guide fee |
The notice says these prices will also be posted at the museum. The enquiry phone for guides is (023) 63679067. The notice does not say in which languages the staff guides work.
What can't I bring in, and is there luggage storage?
Everyone goes through a security check at the exhibition-area entrance, with an X-ray machine and metal detector gates. The visitor notice asks you to take metal items out of your pockets beforehand so the check is quick.
The notice's main list of things to leave outside is: controlled knives, dangerous goods, lighters, food, drinks, toys, pets, strong-smelling items, and unpackaged fragile or sharp items. The longer list of banned items on the same page covers:
- guns, explosives and fireworks, and imitations of them;
- controlled knives, and other sharp or blunt tools such as kitchen knives, scissors, axes and hammers;
- flammable and explosive items such as alcohol, petrol, lighters, matches, hairspray and nail polish;
- toxic or corrosive substances;
- banners, slogans and flags that may disrupt visits, and political, religious or commercial promotional material that violates relevant laws.
Drinks: the two lists don't match. The first says not to bring drinks, but the long list, which bans liquids, says drinks in soft or hard packaging can come in after a security check or after the owner takes a taste. If you carry a drink, be ready to open it at the check. The museum's etiquette page (dated 2018-08-27) asks you to eat and drink in the rest areas outside the halls.
Photos: no flash, no selfie sticks and no tripods. The notice also bans video inside the exhibition halls; press crews need permission from the museum in advance.
Luggage: the visitor notice says to leave large items outside or use the free storage (寄存中心). The convenience-services page says there is an automatic locker area to the left of the entrance gallery (入口生态廊). Neither page gives a size limit or hours for the storage.
Wheelchairs and strollers: the museum lends both free of charge from the front desk. You pay a 300 yuan deposit, or 100 yuan plus a valid ID, and get it back when you return the item. That page is dated 2014-10-24.
How to get to the Chongqing Three Gorges Museum by metro
The museum is at 236 Renmin Road in Yuzhong District. Its route page (dated 2015-01-01) names two rail stations:
- Line 2, Zengjiayan station (曾家岩).
- Line 3, Niujiaotuo station (牛角沱).
The page calls them 轻轨, light rail. Chongqing Rail Transit's network map marks Lines 2 and 3 as monorails. The map also shows that Zengjiayan is now a transfer station between Line 2 and Line 10, and Niujiaotuo is a transfer station between Line 2 and Line 3.
The map and the route page give no exit numbers, distances or walking times, so this page can't say which station is closer or how long the walk is.
Is it close to the People's Great Hall?
The museum's route page does not say how far the museum is from the People's Great Hall. It lists bus stops called Dalitang (大礼堂站) and Xuetianwan (学田湾站). On the network map, Line 10 has a station called 大礼堂 Chongqing People's Auditorium, between Zengjiayan and Qixinggang. The map shows no distances, so we don't give a walking time or call it the nearest station.
Buses
The route page lists these bus lines for the Dalitang and Xuetianwan stops: 132, 145, 181, 261, 262, 265, 421, 829, 862 (inner ring), 866, 881, 152, 215, 104, 112, 338, 609 and 322. It is a 2015 list, so routes may have changed.
