Shanghai Metro credit card tap to ride in 2026: which foreign cards work

Short answer

Yes, for the card brands the city lists: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB contactless cards and UnionPay chip cards. Shanghai Metro’s tap-to-ride pilot has covered the whole urban rail network since June 28, 2025. You must have small-amount password-free payment switched on and enough balance or credit. The Shanghai government pages don’t separate credit from debit, and none of them says Apple Pay or Google Pay works with a foreign card.

Can I tap a foreign Visa or Mastercard on Shanghai Metro gates in 2026?

Yes, for the card brands the city lists. Since June 28, 2025, Shanghai Metro has let passengers enter and exit with a contactless bank card on the whole urban rail network, including all municipal lines. The Shanghai government’s English page of June 27, 2025 calls this a pilot. The network on that page is 896 km, 21 lines and 517 stations. That page doesn’t say whether the pilot has ended or become permanent.

A government page of December 26, 2025 still describes Visa tap-to-ride as in use. It says passengers from 140 countries and regions have used it since the June 28 launch.

Two things have to be true at the gate: small-amount password-free payment is switched on, and the card has enough balance or credit. Both are explained below. If your trip also includes the capital, the same question for Beijing is on the Beijing subway payment page.

Which foreign cards work on Shanghai Metro gates?

The June 27, 2025 English page lists these:

  • UnionPay chip cards.
  • Visa: international Visa cards and Visa-CUP dual-brand dual-currency cards.
  • Mastercard, American Express and JCB contactless cards.
  • e-CNY hard wallets that meet the People’s Bank of China Digital Currency Research Institute specifications.

It excludes Type-B chips and cards without ODA function. A Chinese brief from Jiefang Daily on the Shanghai government site (June 29, 2025) lists the same brands: UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB.

Discover and Diners Club are not in the gate-tap list. An English page of April 17, 2024 names them, but only for linking to Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay or the Metro Daduhui app, not for tapping at the gate. Neither the June 27, 2025 page nor the Chinese reprint explains how to tell whether your card has a Type-B chip or ODA function. Your card issuer is the one to ask.

Credit card or debit card?

The pages say "contactless bank card" and say the card or wallet needs "sufficient balance or credit". They never split credit from debit. A credit card of a listed brand is covered only in that sense, and the pages don’t say more.

Do I need to switch anything on first?

Yes: small-amount password-free payment. The June 27, 2025 page says passengers must enable it. The Maglev page of June 14, 2025 says the same.

A Chinese reprint of The Paper’s Q and A on a Shanghai port-office site adds that the tap function itself needs no separate activation. It describes small-amount password-free payment as a quick small payment where you aren’t asked for a password or a signature. To check whether it is on, it says to ask the card issuer. This reprint is a media report on a government site, not the Metro’s own page, and it is the source for several details below.

Can I use Apple Pay or Google Pay at the gate?

The pages don’t settle it. The Shanghai government English page of June 27, 2025 says "card or wallet" only about e-CNY hard wallets. It names no phone wallet. The Chinese reprint lists "各种符合金融IC卡标准的手机Pay", meaning all kinds of mobile Pay that meet the financial IC card standard. The Jiefang Daily brief doesn’t mention mobile Pay.

No page says Apple Pay or Google Pay works with a foreign-issued card, and none says it doesn’t. We’d bring the physical card.

How does the gate charge a foreign card?

  • On entry: the reprint says tapping in starts a pre-authorization. If the balance or credit limit is too low, you can’t exit normally and must go to the service center. No page states a pre-authorization amount.
  • Dual-brand cards: the Maglev page says that for a card with both UnionPay and a foreign brand, the gate prioritizes the UnionPay channel. The reprint says the same for a Visa-UnionPay dual-brand chip card.
  • Same card in and out: the Shanghai government pages don’t say whether you must tap out with the card you tapped in with.
  • Fare, currency and fees: none of these pages says how a gate tap is priced, in which currency it is charged, or whether your issuer adds foreign transaction fees. Ask your issuer about those fees.

For the fare basis, the English How to take metro in Shanghai page, which shows no date, says fares are distance-based: 3 yuan for under 6 km, plus 1 yuan for each additional 10 km.

What if my card is rejected or I can’t exit the station?

  1. Can’t get in: the reprint suggests the Metro Daduhui (大都会) app, the Suishenxing code (随申码) or a transport card (交通卡/乘车码) instead.
  2. Got in but can’t get out: go to the service center. The reprint says you can pay the fare there by card, cash or QR code, or buy another ticket and leave.
  3. Want to know why it failed: the June 27, 2025 page says to visit station service centers or contact your card issuer or the hotlines, all available 24/7. Shanghai Metro is 021-6437-0000, UnionPay is 95516 and the e-CNY line is 956196. The reprint also lists Bank of Communications at 95559.

Before you rely on it

These pages describe a pilot. Keep a second way to pay in case the tap fails, and know where the station service center is.

What if I have no card that works?

The undated English "How to take metro in Shanghai" page lists these other ways to pay. No page says any of these routes was withdrawn when tap-to-ride arrived, so treat them as alternatives, not replaced options.

OptionWhat the page says
Metro Daduhui appWorks with an Alipay or WeChat Pay account. Without one, Mastercard holders can link a Mastercard in the app.
Single TicketBought at ticket vending machines. POS machines at any station let international card holders buy tickets, and they accept Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay and Discover.
Shanghai Public Transport CardStored-value card, also loadable on a phone or watch. Swipe to enter and exit.
Suishenxing appOne code for subway, bus and ferry. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners Club and JCB cards can be linked.
One-Day Pass18 yuan, unlimited metro rides within 24 hours of first entry. Not valid on the Maglev.
Three-Day Pass45 yuan, unlimited metro rides within 72 hours of first use. Not valid on the Maglev. Sold at ticket booths at metro stations.
Maglev and Metro PassOne-day metro pass plus a single or round-trip economy Maglev ticket.

The pass prices above come from that page, which shows no date. An English page of April 17, 2024 came first. It says that from April 15, 2024 POS machines in all metro-station service centers handle ticket purchases with domestic and international cards. It adds that foreign visitors can register on the Metro Daduhui app and link foreign cards, then scan the app at the gate and pay afterward. No page confirms that the service-center procedure is unchanged today.

Cash matters too. The Maglev page says riders with problems can use cash, the Metro Daduhui app or local public transportation cards. For the wider picture, see Is cash accepted in China in 2026?

Does tap-to-ride work on the Maglev to Pudong Airport?

Yes. The English Maglev page of June 14, 2025 says Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards, plus e-CNY hard wallets, can pass the Maglev gates from June 14, 2025, as a pilot. The same password-free requirement applies. It describes the line as linking Pudong International Airport with Longyang Road Station in eight minutes.

The reprint says the pilot widened on June 28 from the Maglev line to the whole rail network, including municipal lines. No page says whether the 21 lines include or exclude the Maglev, so don’t assume either way. The One-Day and Three-Day passes exclude the Maglev, as the table above shows.

FAQ

Can I tap my foreign Visa or Mastercard on Shanghai Metro gates?

Yes, if it is a contactless card of a listed brand. Shanghai Metro has run a tap-to-ride pilot on the whole urban rail network since June 28, 2025, and Visa and Mastercard are both on the list. Turn on small-amount password-free payment and keep enough balance or credit.

Does a credit card work, or only a debit card?

The government pages say bank card and say the card needs sufficient balance or credit. They don’t split credit and debit, so they don’t promise more than that. Your card issuer can tell you whether your own card is set up for it.

Do I need to turn anything on before I tap?

Yes: small-amount password-free payment. A Chinese reprint of a June 2025 Q&A says the tap function itself needs no separate activation. To check whether password-free payment is on, ask your card issuer.

Can I use Apple Pay or Google Pay at the gate?

The Shanghai government English page doesn’t name any phone wallet. A Chinese reprint says mobile Pay that meets the financial IC card standard is supported. No page says Apple Pay or Google Pay works with a foreign-issued card, so we’d bring the physical card.

What if my card is rejected or I can’t exit?

If you can’t get in, the Chinese reprint suggests the Metro Daduhui app, the Suishenxing code or a transport card. If you got in but can’t get out, go to the station service center and pay the fare by card, cash or QR code, or buy another ticket.

Can I tap in with one card and tap out with another?

The Shanghai government pages don’t say. No page states that the same card must be used, and no page says a different card is fine.

Does tap-to-ride also work on the Maglev to Pudong Airport?

Yes. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards and e-CNY hard wallets have worked at the Maglev gates since June 14, 2025, as a pilot, with the same password-free requirement. The One-Day and Three-Day passes don’t cover the Maglev.
