Chongqing to Zhangjiajie by high-speed train: the short answer
Leave from Chongqing East (重庆东) if you can. In the 12306 English-site result run on 6 October 2026 for travel on 14 October 2026, all 13 trains have a Chongqing East departure, and those lines are shorter and cheaper than the same trains boarded elsewhere. Every line arrives at Zhangjiajie West (张家界西). The fastest, G2445, leaves at 09:52 and arrives at 11:58. Run your own date on the 12306 English site, because times and fares change.
12306 spells the stations Chongqingdong (East), Chongqingxi (West), Chongqingbei (North), Jiangbeijichang (Jiangbei Airport station) and Zhangjiajiexi (Zhangjiajie West). No line in this result ends at the station spelled just Zhangjiajie.
Which Chongqing station should I leave from: East, West, North or the airport?
A train that stops at several Chongqing stations gets one line per boarding station, so the 23 lines with times and fares among the page's 25 results are 13 trains. Two lines (G2427 and G2439) show no times or fares, only a note that ticketing is temporarily closed due to timetable adjustment.
| Boarding station | Trains in the result | Travel time | Second-class seat (all marked "x% off") |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chongqing East (重庆东) | All 13 | 2h06m to 2h53m | ¥190 to ¥230 |
| Chongqing West (重庆西) | 6: G2431, G2321, G2417, G2449, G2437, G2451 | 3h35m to 3h52m | ¥217 to ¥257 |
| Chongqing North (重庆北) | 3: G2431, G3763, G2437 | 3h53m to 4h19m | ¥237 to ¥260 |
| Jiangbei Airport (江北机场) | 1: G3763, departs 14:03 | 3h32m | ¥230 |
Take G2431, which reaches Zhangjiajie West at 15:22 from every station. From East (12:38) it takes 2h44m and costs ¥215 in second class. From West (11:35) it takes 3h47m and costs ¥242. From North (11:03) it takes 4h19m and costs ¥260. All three fares carry an 11% or 12% off mark. Same train, same arrival, but you sit longer and pay more, so read the departure station before you pay.
At Chongqing West and North, follow the signs to the metro or the taxi rank.
From Chongqing East, the earliest departure is G3869 at 07:12 (arrives 09:41) and the latest is G2451 at 19:35 (arrives 22:16). After G2445 (2h06m), the quickest are G2447 at 16:21 (2h28m) and G3869 (2h29m).
How much is a Chongqing to Zhangjiajie train ticket?
From Chongqing East on 14 October 2026, a second-class seat is ¥190 to ¥230 and a first-class seat is ¥305 to ¥370. The top class has different names: seven trains list a "business-class seat" at ¥653 to ¥763, five list a "VIP seat" at ¥342 to ¥370, and G2447 lists a "premium first-class seat" at ¥453. Every real line carries an "x% off" mark for that date, from 5% to 22%. A marked fare is a discounted fare, so the full fare is higher, and the marks vary by train and date. The page also lists "standing ticket" fares at second-class prices; pick a seat instead.

Chongqing East station: where it is and how to reach it
The Chongqing government's English page (10 August 2026) says the station is in the Chayuan area of Nan'an District and "officially began operations on June 27, 2025". A Chinese government page of 26 June 2025 puts it south-east of the Chayuan new area (南岸区茶园新区东南侧) and says the opening launched the first Chengdu and Chongqing to Zhangjiajie high-speed EMU services.
A Chongqing government notice of 27 June 2025 says the Rail Transit Line 6 East Station section opened at 11:30 that day with the station. It starts at Chongqing East, has four stations (Chongqing East, Taohuaqiao, Baileyuan, Liujiaping), is 6.9 km long, and has a same-platform transfer with Line 6 at Liujiaping. Initial hours were 7:30 to 21:30, later than G3869's 07:12 departure, so check current hours for an early train. The notice also lists bus routes planned at opening, with no fares.
How to buy the ticket on the 12306 English site with a foreign passport
12306.cn is the official website of China Railway Customer Service Center. Its FAQ says the railway department will not handle ticketing problems that occurred on other websites.
- Register. The registration page accepts only foreign passports. The form asks for nationality, name, passport number, passport expiration date, date of birth, gender, username, password and email address. There is no phone-number field; notifications go by email.
- Verify your identity before you buy. A Ministry of Commerce guide on the Beijing government's English site (24 April 2024) lists three ways: fill in your name, nationality and ID number on the English site or app, and the system checks them automatically; upload a photo of your passport information page for manual verification; or take a valid passport to a station ticket office. A 12306 notice (in Chinese) says accounts marked 待核验 (waiting) or 未通过 (not passed) cannot buy and need verification at a station ticket window with the original ID, though foreign passport users can also verify by uploading a passport photo on 12306.
- Search and pay. Pick the line with the departure station you want. Online, the guide says you can "pay by Chinese or foreign bank cards as well as mobile payment apps". At a station ticket office you can pay by Chinese or foreign bank cards, in RMB cash, or by mobile payment apps. For specifics, the guide says to "refer to the signage or cashier for guidance".
Station self-service machines are a different matter. The Chinese rail rules (in force from 1 June 2026, article 11) and the guide list the Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, not the foreign passport, for foreigners at those machines. With a passport, plan on 12306 (website, app or booking hotline) or a ticket counter.
How many days ahead can I buy a Chongqing to Zhangjiajie train ticket?
An undated 12306 help answer says internet presale is currently 15 days, including the day you buy. Sales open at staggered times by region, and railway groups may adjust the period temporarily, so watch station notices. On 6 October 2026 the English site's own presale range ran from 6 to 20 October 2026, which matches.
How do I board with a passport? Is the itinerary sheet my ticket?
No. You can print or download an "itinerary sheet" (行程信息提示) after buying, but the English FAQ says it cannot be used as a ticket, and the Chinese rail rules say the same. Your e-ticket is the ticket, and the valid ID you used to buy it is your boarding voucher (rules, article 24). Carry the same passport you booked with. The rules treat a trip where ticket, ID and person do not match as having no ticket (按无票处理).
- The Ministry of Commerce guide says foreign travelers can enter and exit the station "through automatic or manual ticket check gates with the original valid identification documents used when buying tickets". It does not say whether a passport can be scanned at an automatic gate.
- All passengers and belongings go through security. The FAQ warns of queues at the ticket window, security check, ID verification counter, ticket gate and baggage counter.
- Ticket sales and check halt before departure; the time is on the station announcement. Arrive early.
From Zhangjiajie West station to the city and Wulingyuan
Three Hunan government pages cover this, and none is a timetable.
To the city. A Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism guide (29 August 2022) for a conference whose main venue was Zhangjiajie People's Square (张家界人民广场) says to board at the high-speed rail bus stop, take Route 6 to the Puguang Chan Temple (普光禅寺) stop, then walk 2 minutes. The whole trip takes about 50 minutes. By taxi, set the destination to People's Square; the page says about 18 minutes. It gives no fare.
To Wulingyuan. A Hunan Department of Transport article of 15 July 2025 says the Zhangjiajie "city-scenic bus" (城景巴士) started its first 5 lines on 15 April 2024. It quotes a visitor who scanned the "Xiangyuexing" (湘悦行) QR code at about 6:00 at Zhangjiajie West on 13 July 2025 and says the bus goes from the station directly to Wulingyuan (武陵源), with luggage sent through to the hotel. Those are the visitor's words, not a stated service rule. The article says the bus company moved its first bus to 6:20 and its last to 19:30, adjustable with scenic-area crowds, and that Xiangyuexing lets you buy and change tickets and check vehicle positions. A page of 6 June 2025 lists six first-phase lines, but names the station line only as Zhangjiajie West to Qixing Mountain (七星山), so that page names no route from the station to Wulingyuan.
What the pages leave out
The Hunan Department of Transport pages of 15 July 2025 and 6 June 2025 do not list fares, departure times or a line number for the station to Wulingyuan, and do not say whether Xiangyuexing has an English interface or accepts foreign cards or passports. For current tickets, use the Xiangyuexing platform.
