Yunnan Provincial Museum reservation, free entry and opening hours in 2026

Short answer

The Yunnan Provincial Museum is free. Its Services page tells individual visitors to book through its WeChat official account, and its 2026 National Day notice asks visitors to book ahead on WeChat or through an Alipay official channel. Neither page says what foreign visitors without a Chinese phone number should do, so call the visitor service desk on 0871-67286223 before you go. On 1-7 October 2026 it is open every day, 9:00-18:30 (last entry 18:00). From Thursday 8 October 2026 it goes back to Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30).

Do you need to book the Yunnan Provincial Museum?

Entry is free, and the museum's holiday notices ask you to book ahead. For 1-7 October 2026 its National Day notice asks visitors to book in advance on its WeChat official account or through the Alipay official channel. For ordinary weeks, the Services page tells individuals to follow the same WeChat account and reply 预约 (yuyue, "booking"). It does not say whether booking is compulsory on every day.

What neither page tells you is how a foreign visitor without a Chinese phone number should book. So the safe plan is to call the visitor service desk, 0871-67286223, before you go. You can call in Chinese, or ask your hotel to call for you. The Services page does not say whether anyone on that line speaks English.

How to make a Yunnan Provincial Museum reservation as a foreigner

The museum's website describes only two routes, both on Chinese apps. Here is what it says, step by step:

  1. Find the museum's WeChat official account and follow it. The Services page calls it the 云南省博物馆 (Yunnan Provincial Museum) WeChat official account but gives no account ID, so check the name carefully before you follow.
  2. Reply 预约 to get the individual booking instructions. For the entry policy, reply 参观 (canguan, "visit"). Both are on the Services page.
  3. For the National Day holiday, the notice also names the "Alipay official channel". It does not say which Alipay page or mini programme that is.
  4. If you cannot use WeChat or Alipay, the website gives no other route. Call 0871-67286223 and ask what a visitor without a Chinese phone number should do.

The Services page and the National Day notice do not mention passports, foreign visitors or ID. That silence is not a yes or a no. Do not assume you can walk in with a passport, and do not assume you cannot.

Wrong number to avoid

You may see 0871-67286863 listed elsewhere as a booking line. The museum's Overview page lists it as the large-item storage desk (大件物品寄存处).

Groups and paid guides

Group bookings use the same number, 0871-67286223, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-16:30, closed Monday. The page says statutory holidays are an exception and does not say what the hours are then. Paid guide bookings go to 0871-67204752, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-17:00; holidays follow the museum's announcements.

Is the Yunnan Provincial Museum free? Can I get in with a passport?

It is free. The Overview page says the museum has been permanently free to the public since 18 May 2008 (2008年5月18日对外永久性免费开放), and that the new building opened on 18 May 2015. The Services page lists no ticket price.

Free does not answer the passport question. The Services page, the Overview page and the National Day notice do not say what is checked at the door or whether a passport works for booking or entry. Everyone goes through security screening at the entrance. For the passport question, use the phone number above.

Yunnan Provincial Museum opening hours in 2026

DatesOpen daysHoursLast entry
1-7 October 2026 (Thursday to Wednesday)Every day, including Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 October9:00-18:3018:00
From Thursday 8 October 2026Tuesday to Sunday; closed all day Monday9:00-17:0016:30

On regular days, entry starts at 9:00, but the Services page says 9:10 is when service formally starts and you can go into the halls. Clearing starts at 16:45. The pages do not give the 9:10 and 16:45 details for the National Day days.

For other holidays, the Services page says opening hours are announced on the WeChat official account and the website. The museum's announcement list has separate opening notices for several 2026 holidays, such as Spring Festival, Labour Day and Dragon Boat, so look for the notice that matches your dates.

The National Day notice also says the special exhibition on Pompeii objects from the Naples National Archaeological Museum (《灰烬下的史诗》) is open during the holiday, with two temporary shows. It does not give an end date for the Pompeii exhibition.

The museum's announcement list does not confirm it. Ancient Yunnan (《远古云南》) is one of six permanent exhibitions, on the second floor. A notice dated 18 May 2026 closed it for upgrade from Wednesday 20 May to Monday 15 June 2026.

A second notice with the same title is dated 16 June 2026. It is posted only as an image with no text on the page, so the gallery's current status remains unconfirmed. The museum's announcement list shows nothing newer than that, apart from the National Day notice. If this gallery is your reason to go, ask the service desk on 0871-67286223 first.

How to get to the Yunnan Provincial Museum from central Kunming

The address is 云南省昆明市广福路6393号 (Guangfu Road No. 6393, Kunming). Put it into Amap or Baidu Maps for a live route from where you are staying. The museum's own directions are short, and they give no walking times or fares:

  • Bus: get off at Guandu District Government stop (官渡区政府站). Lines 169, 252 and a12 stop there.
  • Metro: take Line 1 to Xingyaolu station (星耀路站). Walk to Zijuncun (Caiyun North Road) stop (子君村(彩云北路)站), take bus z84, and get off at Guangfu Road Junction (Gudukou Road) stop (广福路口(古渡口路)站).

The website has nothing on routes from Kunming Railway Station or Kunming South Station. For the city itself, see our Kunming travel guide.

Suitcases, bags and what you can't bring in

Leave big luggage at the large-item storage desk (大件物品寄存处) before you enter. The Services page asks you not to bring large boxes and bags into the museum, to speed up security. The storage rules say:

  • Storage is for museum visitors only.
  • Collect your things by 16:50 the same day. Nothing is handed back after closing. The storage rules add that evening openings run to closing time (夜场至闭馆时间), but do not say whether the longer National Day hours count as one.
  • A lost storage token costs ¥20 to replace.
  • No cash, jewellery or fragile valuables. If you leave electronics or collectibles, you fill in a registration form and sign it.
  • Items left more than 30 days count as abandoned and may be destroyed. Food that spoils may be destroyed sooner.

The storage desk's number on the Overview page is 0871-67286863.

Not allowed in the halls

  • Knives and sharp tools, lighters, matches and flammables such as hairspray and nail polish.
  • Tripods and video cameras (the Services page lists both), selfie sticks and stabilisers. Flash is not allowed in the halls.
  • Drinks only if you taste them yourself at security. Food that passes security is allowed, but eat it in the designated areas, not in the halls.
  • Smoking, pets, and electric wheelchairs. The service desk swaps an electric wheelchair for a manual one.

Photos are welcome in the permanent and special exhibitions. For borrowed temporary shows, a sign in the hall tells you if photography is not allowed.

Are there English guides or audio guides?

The museum's Services page does not say. It describes three services, and none names a language:

  • Free scheduled tours: daily at 10:00 and 14:00, with holiday times set by the opening arrangements. They cover the second-floor galleries 远古云南, 文明之光 and 南中称雄, and the third-floor galleries 妙香佛国, 开疆戍边 and 百年风云.
  • Paid guide: covers the six permanent exhibitions. The price "depends on actual content", and no figure is given. Book on 0871-67204752.
  • Digital guide: a smart guide, phone audio, voice guide, VR guide and AR glasses guide. Send 讲解 ("guide") as a private message on the WeChat account for details.

The staff profiles on the Overview page do describe one staff member as the museum's Chinese-English guide (中英文讲解员), but neither page says how to book an English tour.

If you need English, ask when you call before you plan the day around a tour. We can help you plan the day in Kunming and tell you how the museum's booking works, but we do not book museum entry.
