Suzhou Museum tickets and booking in 2026: do you need a reservation?

Short answer

Book the main Suzhou Museum (204 Dongbei Street) in advance. It runs a real-name, time-slot, full-reservation system, with bookings open up to seven days ahead and same-day booking only while tickets are left, closing 20 minutes before the stop-entry time (15:40). The West Museum (399 Changjiang Road) needs no booking: you pass a security check and queue in. Both open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-17:00, no entry after 16:00, and close on Monday except national holidays. The museum's pages do not say whether a foreign passport works for booking.

Do you need to book Suzhou Museum in advance?

For the main museum, yes: book ahead. The museum runs a real-name, time-slot, full-reservation system at 204 Dongbei Street (东北街204号). You can book up to seven days ahead, and if you didn't, you can still book on the day while tickets are left. The museum's reservation notice describes no gate-ticket route, so don't plan on one.

The West Museum (苏州博物馆西馆, 399 Changjiang Road) is different. It needs no booking. You walk up, pass the security check and queue in order.

How to book Suzhou Museum tickets online

The museum names three booking channels: its official website, its official WeChat public account, and the WeChat mini-program 苏州博物馆全预约 (Suzhou Museum Full Reservation). The reservation page shows a QR code to scan with WeChat. The reservation notice and visiting guide don't say whether the booking form has an English version.

  1. Register on the official website with your real name and complete your profile. The museum's visiting guide (dated 8 January 2025) says to do this before you book.
  2. Pick a date within the booking window: up to seven days ahead, counting the day you book. The system runs 08:00-23:00 daily. The notice doesn't say when new dates open.
  3. Pick a time slot and fill in every visitor's name and valid ID number (有效证件号码). The names and numbers must be true, or that person can't enter.
  4. On the day, use the booking entrance lane during your slot. Staff check your booking details and a valid ID at the entrance.

Limits to know: each valid ID can book once a day, and one account can book at most 10 people a day. Only book through the museum's own channels. The notice warns against unofficial booking channels and says every booking needs real-name verification at the door.

Same-day booking

If you didn't book ahead and tickets are still left on the day, you can book that day. Same-day booking closes 20 minutes before the stop-entry time. Last entry is 16:00, so booking stops at 15:40. If you hold the last slot of the day, you must be inside before the cutoff.

Can a foreign tourist book Suzhou Museum with a passport?

The museum's pages don't say. Neither the reservation notice nor the visiting guide says whether a foreign passport can be used to book or to enter the main museum. The booking asks for each visitor's name and a valid ID number, and the document is checked at the entrance. The only place the museum's pages name a foreign passport is its Ancient Books Library, which accepts one for reader registration. That says nothing about the main museum.

So don't assume either way. Phone the main museum on 0512-67575666 before you build a day around it, or ask your hotel to call. We can help you plan the day around Suzhou and explain how booking works, but we don't book museum tickets.

The notice allows active-duty soldiers, disabled visitors and people aged 70 or over with limited mobility to enter without booking with their own valid ID and one eligible adult companion, and also names veterans, martyrs' families, firefighters and people aged 60 to 69 as booking-free groups with their own valid ID, once every three months; it doesn't say whether foreign visitors in those groups are covered.

Is Suzhou Museum free? Do special exhibitions cost extra?

General admission to the main museum: the current Chinese pages state no ticket price. The one official line on general admission is on an old English page, dated 2015-09-10. It says the museum has been free to the public since 18 May 2008, and that charges may be required for some special exhibitions. The booking rules mention no booking fee, and they say nothing more on price.

The West Museum has been free since its trial opening. Its visiting guide gives 29 September 2021, while its introduction page says the trial run began on 25 September 2021. Take either as late September 2021.

Some special exhibitions are paid. The July 2026 typhoon notices say paid special exhibitions at both the main museum and the West Museum are ticketed through the 苏州博物馆全预约 mini-program. No ticket price for any special exhibition appears in the museum's notices or on its exhibition list, and the exhibition list doesn't say which current exhibitions are the paid ones. Ask the museum before you go.

Suzhou Museum opening hours: is it open on Monday?

The main museum and the West Museum both open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00, with no entry after 16:00. Both close on Monday, except on national statutory holidays. The museum's pages don't give separate hours for a Monday that falls on a holiday.

The museum can close temporarily for a major event or equipment maintenance, and says it will tell the public. Special extended opening hours are published as separate notices.

Suzhou Museum slots full, or can't make your slot?

  • Look again on the day. Same-day booking is open while tickets remain, until 15:40.
  • Move your slot. Each booking can be rescheduled once, only to another open slot on the original date.
  • Cancel in time. Cancel before your slot ends. The notice doesn't say whether cancelled tickets go back on sale.
  • Don't be late. If you arrive outside plus or minus 30 minutes of your slot, the booking is invalid.
  • Try the West Museum. It needs no booking to get in.

No-show ban

Two no-shows in a row, or four within 90 days, trigger a 90-day ban. During it you can't book the museum or sign up for its events. Cancel if your plans change.

Main museum or West Museum (Xiguan): which should you visit?

Visit the one that fits your day, or both if you have time.

  • Main museum: 204 Dongbei Street, opened in 2006. Booking required. Take metro Line 6 to Zhuozhengyuan Subo station (拙政园苏博站). The visitor entrance is the museum's main gate and the exit is the Prince Zhong's Mansion (忠王府) gate.
  • West Museum: 399 Changjiang Road, High-tech Zone (高新区). No booking. Take Suzhou Rail Transit Line 1 or Line 3 to Shizishan (狮子山) station. The introduction page lists a general history hall, a Suzhou crafts hall, a multimedia hall and an international cooperation hall, about 2,100 items on show, and a learning space for young visitors.

We'd pick the main museum if it's the one you've come for. If you can't get a slot, use the West Museum instead. At peak crowds the West Museum slows or pauses entry, so a queue is likely at busy times.

The museum says roads around the main museum are restricted for construction and points to Suzhou municipal government notices. Plan extra time. The notice names no roads or dates.

What changed in 2026: typhoon closure, summer hours, current exhibitions

  • Typhoon closure, 12 July 2026. Because of Typhoon Bavi (巴威), the main museum, West Museum and other museum sites closed for the day. A follow-up notice the same day cancelled the closure for Monday 13 July: the museums opened 09:00-20:00, with last entry at 19:00. People holding a 12 July booking could reuse it on any day from 13 to 19 July. Paid special exhibition tickets for 12 July could be refunded in full.
  • Summer late opening, ended. From 1 July to 30 August 2026 the main museum (not the Prince Zhong's Mansion area) and the West Museum stayed open to 20:00, last entry 19:00. The museum's homepage now shows the normal 09:00-17:00 hours.

Evening hours and temporary closures are announced in separate notices. Phone before you go: 0512-67575666 (main museum) or 0512-67571665 (West Museum, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-17:00).

Current special exhibitions

  • Main museum: 秋赏——齐云节气生活美学特展, a show on living by the seasons made with the lifestyle artist Qi Yun, 29 September to 1 November 2026, in the museum hall and the Prince Zhong's Mansion courtyard. It marks the 20th anniversary of the main building.
  • Main museum: 窗若生花——珠宝艺术展览, a jewellery show built around the lattice windows of Suzhou gardens, 25 September to 24 October 2026, in the Nanmu Hall of the Prince Zhong's Mansion.
  • Main museum: The Real Unreal Landscape, by Xu Bing (徐冰:假作真园), 22 July to 22 October 2026, modern art hall.
  • Where I'm Coming From: I.M. Pei and His Family (问君何处来:贝聿铭和他的家族), 16 July to 15 October 2026.
  • West Museum: Eagle and Laurel: Napoleon and France's Age of Transformation (鹰徽与月桂), 26 July to 25 October 2026, second-floor international cooperation hall.

The homepage also lists three shows closing on 10 and 11 October, without saying where they are: The Prosperity of Gusu (姑苏繁华) and 盛世姑苏游, both to 11 October, and Cats and Dogs (猫猫与狗狗), to 10 October.

Guided tours and audio guides

The museum's docent service is priced per group. At the main museum, an English tour without a special exhibition (at least 60 minutes) costs from ¥200 for up to five people, plus ¥40 for each extra person, up to 30 per group. With one special exhibition (at least 90 minutes) it starts at ¥400. These prices come from the main-museum guide dated 8 January 2025. The guide doesn't say how to book a docent.

Audio guides come in Chinese and English, and AR guide rentals are also offered. Both are valid for four hours. Ask at the rental counter east of the main hall for prices.

What to know on the day

  • Bags: leave them at the Visitor Service Centre, diagonally across from the main gate, 30 minutes before your slot. First-slot visitors can drop bags from 09:00.
  • Don't bring food or drink in, and eat only in the café or the Wisteria Garden (紫藤园). Smoking is banned throughout.
  • No flash, fill lights, selfie sticks or tripods in the galleries. Don't charge devices from wall sockets.
  • No electric bikes, scooters or balance vehicles inside, according to the museum.
  • The museum is kept at about 22 degrees. Untidy dress and slippers are refused entry.

FAQ

Can I just show up at Suzhou Museum without a booking?

At the main museum (204 Dongbei Street), the museum describes a full-reservation system, and its reservation notice doesn't mention buying tickets at the gate. If you haven't booked and tickets are left on the day, you can book that day, up to 15:40. The West Museum needs no booking: you pass a security check and queue in.

Can a foreign tourist book Suzhou Museum with a passport?

The museum's reservation rules don't say whether a passport can be used. The booking asks for each visitor's name and a valid ID number, and the staff at the door check your booking and a valid ID. Phone the museum on 0512-67575666 before you plan around it, or ask your hotel to call.

Is Suzhou Museum free?

An English page on the museum's site, dated 2015-09-10, says it has been free to the public since 18 May 2008 and that some special exhibitions may charge. The current Chinese pages don't state a ticket price for the main museum, and the booking rules mention no booking fee. The West Museum has been free since its trial opening in September 2021.

Is Suzhou Museum open on Monday?

No. Both the main museum and the West Museum close on Monday, except on national statutory holidays. The rest of the week they open 09:00-17:00, with no entry after 16:00.

What if I can't make my time slot?

Cancel before your slot ends, or reschedule once to another open slot on the same date. If you arrive outside plus or minus 30 minutes of your slot, the booking is invalid. Two no-shows in a row, or four within 90 days, bring a 90-day booking ban.

What is the West Museum (Xiguan), and should I go there instead?

The West Museum (苏州博物馆西馆) is a second building at 399 Changjiang Road in the High-tech Zone, with no booking needed. It is a good fallback if the main museum has no slots. Metro Line 1 or Line 3 to Shizishan station gets you there.

Is Suzhou Museum open late in the evening in 2026?

Only when the museum announces it: the visiting guides say evening hours are published separately. In 2026 a summer notice kept the main museum (not the Prince Zhong's Mansion area) and the West Museum open to 20:00, last entry 19:00, from 1 July to 30 August. That period has ended, and the normal 09:00-17:00 hours apply.
